What a stunning building, gardens and interior. Very high expectations of the food for our pre booked group of around 30 for a fancy meal with pre selected meal choices.

The room was very nice however the food service started very slowly and only got slower. There was a feeling that the staff weren’t very interested in providing us a great night. The service was so slow that we had to forgo the cheese course as our taxis started arriving over four hours after we had started eating.

The food was very good however, especially the pea soup, but I’d have liked a larger main as a small steak, basic salad and chips wasn’t in keeping with the fine dinning experience I expected.

Average food, great location. Shame it’s that way around.

Despite the murmur of the Scotch Corner traffic, this place is an oasis of calm, elegance and style. We stayed in the beautiful Tack Room which is part of the attractive Coach House development. With lovely courtyard gardens and communal seating between us and the stroll to the equally lovely dining room... The food here was excellent and surprisingly well-priced. Fabulous sourdough bread followed by a delicious selection of starters including seared mackerel, tempura prawns & cod, peas & broad beans with feta... Superb. A stroll through the exquisitely designed and planted kitchen garden is a must. The plans to extend the accommodation and add a conservatory, fine dining room and pool will no doubt see this wonderful place become The Pig of the North and the stop-off for all discerning travellers on their way North or South.

I hate writing poor reviews about a restaurant but our experience last night was so poor I feel duty bound to do so. We have been visiting The Coach House at Middleton Lodge on average four times a year since it’s actual opening day. It has provided us with some superb food and excellent service but over the last year something has dramatically changed in the running of the restaurant. Firstly the menu changed, not for the better in our opinion, and bizarrely it is now written on a few tatty sheets of paper. The text is so pale that for anyone over fifty it is almost unreadable and which, even after being told about this on a previous visit, they have done nothing to rectify the problem. Secondly the quality of the food, although still OK, has significantly deteriorated. It’s such a shame to see one of our favourite local restaurants reducing its standards.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your review and we are really sorry that your menu wasn't up to standard. I can assure you that this is something that we are looking at. As for the menu change we are currently growing the offering on the estate and have a number of changes going on this year. We will be opening the Forge in October, where head chef Gareth Rayner is developing on the original Coach house food offering, which will be more like the offering that you are used to and looking for. We have altered the Coach House because of two main reasons, firstly we are trying to extend the total offering on site for our hotel residents, who were finding the level of food at the Coach House was not what they wanted when staying with us for multiple evenings. At the same time we are trying to source more food from the estate and when using whole animals we found we needed to alter the menu to be able to use up all of the cuts of meat, inevitably this has lead to a Coach House Burger and other dishes which did not fit with the original Coach House concept. We are aiming at a more relaxed feel for the Coach House, rather than fine dining and are looking to extend with a conservatory to include sofas which will become a relaxed hub for the hotel. If you are aiming at a finer dining experience once every few months the Forge will be the place to try when it opens. I understand that during this process of change there will inevitably be some teething issues and on the whole we have had great feedback on the new menu, with customers both coming back more frequently than before and our residents eating in more as well. We have opened the kitchen gardens this year, and have plans for members facilities in the pipeline. I hope this explains the process behind the changes, however rest assured that any teething issues including standards are being looked into as we constantly try to improve.

First time ever visited surroundings and place absolutely stunning
Went with my son for lunch
Service prompt and good no sooner sat down and a bottle of water bought to table
We both ordered brunch which is served till 2
My son had pancakes bacon and maple syrup and a latte which was lovely. I ordered pochard eggs avocado and chilli on toast topping was good but toast was a bit over cooked.
Definitely will return
