We stopped in beautiful Pluckley in the hope that this centrally located historic pub, would provide a warm welcome. Wrong! Whilst the outside looked promising, once inside we realised it was unkempt, poorly maintained and grubby thoroughout. The fireplace was unlit and the entire surround looked as though it hadn't been touched for a long time - ash and debris. There were corner areas full of what looked like junk and the bar area was stacked high with unwashed glasses. Everything was dated, and sadly devoid of the charm the old pub deserves. Someone decided it was a good idea to play old episodes of The Darling Buds of May on the wall mounted TV. Although this was muted, it was left on to compete with possibly the most 'dated' compilation CD I have ever had the misfortune to sit through. We couldn't hear ourselves think, let alone enjoy a quiet drink. The bar staff wee friendly enough but it felt like we had intruded into someone else's chaotic front room that they were struggling to manage, with children and dogs thrown in for good measure!

Although the food was very good we were unable to stay for drinks after due a foul mouthed young man called Ashley who clearly thought he was the pub entertainment considering the loudness of his sheer dribble. It was also very disappointing that the young bar staff had neither the experience or ability to either request that Ashley lower his tone and cease swearing. We were all amazed that a barmaid actually thought swearing back at him would be enough to resolve the issue - it failed miserably. This was the point we decided to leave which just left Ashley and his crew in the pub - no wonder there were no more customers - who would want to go there for a quiet drink or something to eat with the likes of this character being a regular. It’s a shame as the pub is lovely but definitely requires more experienced bar staff who won’t be afraid to deal with characters such as these.

The Sunday lunch here is fantastic , friendly staff . The gravy makes a Sunday lunch and the flavour of the gravy was wonderful and the vegetables were cooked to perfection . Staff very friendly and only waited 10 mins to be served up the roast . Would highly recommend to anyone to try it . Well done 5 stars from me. If you have enough room after you won't be disappointed by the Banoffee Pie . We will definitely be back . A warm friendly pub with good food .

I am sorry to say that whilst the food was ok (albeit a bit salty and over priced), and the staff were pleasant enough the overall experience was spoilt by the complete disregard of cleanliness.
After ordering we sat and started to realise what we had walked into. I fully realise that this pub trades on the image of an "olde worlde" establishment and "haunted pub" this does not excuse the amount of dust and general dirtiness. The carpet and most of the furniture needs dumping, the seats are polished on the seat bit only (presumably by peoples backsides) leaving the edges and spindles thick with dust. The glasses and cutlery needed dishwasher smears polished off. The pepper and salt pots were off putting (something small and black in the salt) .this coupled with the dust leaden black pepper mills and assorted dusty "olde worlde" ornaments, candles and bottles in close proximity to the eating areas did not help the dining experience.
The appearance of two young kitchen staff walking to the gents with dirty "white" chefs tunic covered by anoraks added to our need to eat up and leave as quickly as possible. The staff fag packets and lighters piled on the bar opposite the side door completed the image.
We should have left as quickly as we arrived.

After a friend and I had lunch here about 5 weeks ago, which turned out to be a disaster, we returned today and learned there were problems due to circumstances beyond their control on the day we visited.
Today, our meals were excellent, beautifully cooked and we were well looked after by Cheryl, the manager.
We will be back.

Thank David B
