Owner description: This intriguing castle has been the home of the Berkeley family for more than 850 years. It has been used a filming location for many period dramas, including the BBC's Wolf Hall, Galavant and The White Princess. It was the last place of residence of King Edward II, who was imprisoned in the castle and murdered within its walls. The Castle is open from Easter until the end of October, from Sunday until Wednesday each week. The Butterfly House is open from the beginning of May until the end of September from Sunday to Wednesday, walk amongst the stunning butterflies and tropical plants. A spur of the moment family visit and I must say what an absolute pleasure it was. We fell straight into the services of a guide who made the visit complete.surprisingly, it was free of charge but after paying for guides around the world this one was not left out. His interest and knowledge was captivating. Well done A History filled visit

So we visited the castle on Easter Sunday. From the outside it is absolutely massive and we paid £12.50 each to get in so at that point we thought okay it may be worth the money.... no we were very wrong. The majority of the castle has “private” doors and sections blocked off. They’ve even hidden some doors with cabinets. It should be at least £5.00 entry with only probably a quarter of the castle available to actually walk around. Will not be visiting again.

It's so disappointing to read the review of your recent visit to Berkeley Castle. One of things we're most proud of is that the majority of our visitors feel we represent excellent value for money. I wonder if perhaps you opted not to take advantage of our free guided tours and wandered around on your own. If so, perhaps you didn't discover all of the rooms that are available to our visitors.
The Castle is still a family home and has been lived in by the Berkeley family since they built it almost 900 years' ago; however the family occupy less than a third of the Castle. We have 19 rooms for visitors to view. These include some significant and spectacular areas - Great Hall, Drawing Rooms, Picture Gallery, Kitchen, Buttery, Morning Room, Kings' Gallery and of course, the cell where Edward II was imprisoned.
If you visited as a family I hope you were also able to enjoy free 'dragon themed' Easter entertainment, free arts & crafts, the dressing-up area and the Easter dragon hunt with a complimentary treat when completed. We also have 8 acres of gardens and grounds to explore.
If you do feel that perhaps you've missed out, please get in touch with us, it would be good to give you another opportunity to discover the many wonderful things that we have to offer. Thank you for your valued feedback.

We visited the castle on Wednesday and had the most enjoyable day. The staff are so polite and we were most impressed with the knowledge of our guide, Chris. The castle and grounds are stunning and if you love history then this place should be on your top 10 list!! After our tour we popped into the tearoom for some lovely cake and then to the well-stocked gift shop for a souvenir or two. Thank you to all for making our visit so memorable. We hope to visit again soon!

We had two Australians staying who were only in England for 5 days, so we took them to Berkeley and they had the most marvellous time, seeing British History through the ages. The staff are exceptionally friendly and our guide gave us a fascinating insight to life at the Castle. Thank you a great day out.

I was part of a large group, split into two, and given a tour by two well informed guides, Lynn and David. Both were excellent. The tours were informative, well-paced and entertaining. References were made to link with our own interest in the life and sea battles of Henry VIII. The banner hanging in the great hall was brought back from the Battle of Flodden, maybe on the 'Mary Rose'. A thousand years of history of the castle was brought to life. Many thanks. Thoroughly recommend Berkeley.
