If you have never visited this hotel before it was bought out and had the name Relais added to it you will have no idea of the wonderful treat you have missed. I came 3 times a year to stay and meet up with family and friends for over 20 years up until it was having its makeover, it was just the most wonderful place to stay, excellent food, comfortable rooms . Happy, friendly, welcoming, professional staff who interacted as a happy ,contented team, my nephews worked here during their university days, I did a charity fair here, my sister has. House on the beach here and used to entertain here often. The only thing that remains the same is the fantastic location, good parking although that may not be so if there is a wedding function, and the very annoying rear entrance door from the car park at the back that is still not automatic so you have to grapple with push chairs, luggage, walking aids arthritic hands etc to get in. Gone is the lovely reception counter with welcoming, smiling, reception staff,a couple of comfortable chairs to sit on whilst waiting to be attended to when they were busy, the cabinets full of tempting trinkets for sale, in its place is rail of hanging T shirts that resembles a washing line! Reception now is quite bizarre, a tiny claustrophobic area,2 people one standing the other on a high stall both interacting with their screens, not a flower arrangement, chair, informative leaflet or smile in site, you are expected to wait until they have finished interacting with their screens.welcoming?no, polite yes except for one blonde young woman ( Ithink she is Polish) has a definite attitude problem. This Hotel now feels like a corporate run wedding venue which they probable do well, the hotel part feels like an add on bit to bring in some extra revenue. The re jigged restaurant feels like a college dinning room, the menu is quite limited and very much planned with an eye to a very strict budget, the food is Ok , delicious it is not, hence me not staying for breakfast. The service is ok, they go through the motions but with no heart and very little knowledge, not their fault it is the way they have been trained, one gets a bit irritated with the yes Madam, Sir, no Madam, Sir, three bags full Madam, Sir routine, totally outdated and inappropriate response for this type of establishment. There was a lot of rejigging of tables and chairs going on whilst we were there having lunch too.
I stayed in the accessible room, wonderful uninterrupted sea view with a balcony, the room was very clean, crisp and warm. An excellent wet room, plenty of towels but no hook on the door to hang dressing gown or night clothes on, toiletries are of the refillable bottle type, no shelf anywhere to put your own stuff on and the toilet roll is fixed just a little bit too far to the left of you, no bin liners in the bins, not hygienic and unpleasant for housekeeping to have to deal with. Glasses have no place in a bathroom, disposable, sealed beakers, safer and more hygienic No coat hooks as you come in to hang wet coats on, there are 2 rails one underneath the other in the wardrobe so there is nowhere to hang a dress, midi or maxi skirt or full length coat etc.The tiny dressing table area also is the hospitality station, 2 mugs, 1 spoon! No electric point to plug in a hairdryer, only one chair in the room and a small round table so if there are 2 of you, order room service one of you will have to eat sitting on the bed, or worse still sip your champagne and nibbles sitting on the bed! !Absolutely nowhere to work on your laptop if you happen to have a room service tray.
All the hotel information including room service is accessed via the TV but no information in your room to tell you that , you have to get close up to the TV to read the room service menus .
It was a very cold frosty night the duvet was not quite warm enough, a spare blanket , throw or water bottle would have made a cold night much more comfortable . On the morning of my departure the exit ramp down to the car park was completely iced as was the metal hand rail and the car park, no salt or sand had been put down by 9.45 am , very dangerous.
I feel very much like a hotel inspector writing all this and unfortunately I don’t think the management will take any of it on board, they will just respond to the positive bits, it is clearly having to make stringent savings wherever it can and it shows the indoor pool has been closed, but it wasn’t that great before, I was unable to use the spa facilities as the chairs were too low for me but a lovely smell did drift out into the corridor.I feel for the staff, it certainly doesn’t feel like a happy, valued environment to be working in, a couple of the old staff are still there but totally different people under the new regime
You are paying for the location and a sea view if you book one, the rest is Ok, certainly not memorable. So very sad to write this review about what was one of my favourite hotels and such a missed opportunity not to have turned this unique, wonderful hotel Into something fabulous.
