After looking for somewhere reasonably priced to stay in Southwold we chose The Blyth. We did read lots of the reviews and were a little unsure how the visit would turn out but we were both pleasantly surprised.

Some of the reviews make reference to the condition of the building and yes it is in need of a little TLC but as it's such an old building I feel it adds to the character. This hotel has real potential and I'm sure the current owners will continue with their refurbishments and make the most of this lovely building.

When we booked, there was only 1 room left and we had a standard double room. This was a little on the small side but perfectly comfortable as we did not plan on spending our stay in Southwold in our hotel room. The bed was firm but comfortable and the linen crisp and clean. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided in our room and the extra touch of having more tea and coffee available on the landing was a nice touch too.

We found the bar very pleasant and both food and drinks were excellent.

All of the staff we met we very friendly and most attentive. All made an effort to chat to us and make us feel welcome.

In response to some of the comments about the size of the breakfast, we found there was plenty of choice and portion sizes were adequate. We both have good appetites and were perfectly satisfied with the buffet of cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt and juices and hot drinks. In addition to this, there is a choice from a menu of hot breakfast offerings such as a full English, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, waffles and much more.

I do agree this is not a hotel of 'outstanding' quality but it is perfectly suited for those who aren't prepared to be over charged by some of the other hotels in Southwold. Having had an awful 3 nights stay in the Hilton in York recently (which we would not return to) we will most definitely recommend The Blyth and stay here again when we return to Southwold.

Thank you for your hospitality and recommendations of where to visit and how to get there. We look forward to seeing the improvements when we next visit.

Room tip: We stayed in room 1 which was a little small. Book well in advance and other larger rooms will be available.

Me and my husband recently stayed at the Blyth hotel in southwold!! Absolutely amazing. Room was a bit tired and the windows need touching up but over all it was GREAT. The staff are so friendly. Our waitress “Hannah” could not have been better. Was so happy and was interested about our day. She really made our trip. Food was great and a good size. Can’t wait to go back next year.

We stayed at The Blyth for 2 nights to celebrate our Golden Wedding. We had a great stay in the Southwold Room, which is a very large and comfortable room, with a feature fireplace.. The hotel staff were very friendly and even gave us an anniversary card, which we appreciated very much. The breakfasts and dinner at the hotel were both excellent. Time in the bar is a great way to end an evening. Southwold is a very nice town, with good walks, we enjoyed our stay very much, and would recommend the Blyth

Room tip: The hotel is in a very good position for all amenities

When I read some of the reviews before setting off on our weekend away, I was starting to worry a bit. We had booked 2 rooms, and one was for my elderly Mum, and I hoped I hadn’t made a mistake.

Well, I needn’t have worried, we had a great stay. The place is obviously being refurbished and some parts look aged and in need of repair. But we found the ambience and general feel of the place absolutely charming. The rooms were clean and well equipped, the bathrooms tidy, and the shower worked well once I’d got the hang of it.

Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, and we spent a couple of evenings in the bar in the evening playing cards and laughing. It was quiet and relaxed, just what we wanted.

The breakfasts were good, though the full English could have been a bit bigger for my husband’s appetite, and more than one piece of bacon and one sausage would have been welcomed by him.

This is obviously a hotel with a lot of potential for development. Things aren’t slick and completed yet, but that doesn’t take anything away from the general feel of the place.

We really enjoyed it.
