We stayed for 4 nights in Nov 2010. Came to Longyearbyen in Winter in the hopes of seeing the Aurora. No such luck - but loved the hotel!
Rooms are spacious, rustic in style - lots of timber and stone. The photos probably explain better than words do. The bathroom (shower, no tub) had heated flooring and was delightfully warm (an appreciated considering it was -10C outside).
The staff could not have been nicer - very friendly and helpful.
Rate included Norwegian style buffet breakfast and was hearty enough and remained open until 10am. Found the best deal through myhotelguru.com
There is no restaurant in the hotel itself, but the other half of the building it occupies houses the Kroa licenced restaurant and the popular Svalbar (pub + food) is literally just across the road, 20 metres away. A supermarket is about 200m away and there are many shops in the vicinity.
One of the nicest features of the hotel is their Cognac Room, an attic with glass ceiling and plenty of comfy cushions and blankets.
I should mention that the rooms do not have TV, telephones, fridge, minibar or wardrobes, but we did not consider this to be a negative point. The hotel does have free WiFi.
All in all, despite freezing temperatures, 24 hours of darkness and no Aurora, we still loved our stay and would be only too happy to visit again one day.More
