Towcester has been inhabited since 3,500 BC- and therein lies the attraction in visiting this charming museum where we learn about the history of the town through the Iron Age, the Viking invasion, the arrival of the Romans to the present day. This is a small and charming museum manned by volunteers who are unusually friendly and welcoming. The museum comprises five rooms but there is plenty to view and learn. Towcester is a charming town with cafés and restaurants so you can reward yourself after your tour. The children will enjoy the museum which is geared to teaching them all about the history of the town in a fun and interesting way.

We visited the Museum at Towcester with our Granddaughter during half term week. We had promised to take her to a museum but hadn't realised the one in Northampton is closed for refurbishment. A quick bit of research revealed that Towcester was a good alternative. We certainly were not disappointed.
We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived and Lucy was provided with a quiz to complete during her visit. The museum states that the exhibits deal with local history but dont be put off by that. The events and time periods covered are relevant to the history of the country just looked at from the perspective of Towcester.
For us the best thing was the way the exhibits have specific boards aimed at children with the information provided in an interesting way for all age groups. The other really
excellent idea is the provision of costumes of the era that children can try on. We have some great pictures to remind us of our visit.
We should have noted the names of the two ladies who took the time to have a chat with us and make us all feel so very welcome.
We have no hesitation in recommending a visit to Towcester museum.

Came across the museum when staying in Towcester for the weekend. Very informative. Run by volunteers who were full of information and keen to share. Well laid out and ideal for children as some facts on smaller boards at childens eye level. Plenty of interaction with history with worksheets and costumes. Smaĺl charge but worth every penny. There was a family with 3 children of various ages there at the same time and bored or fed up they definitely were not. If you want to know the local history through the ages from before the Saxons to today this is a definate must.

Situated centrally within the historical core of Towcester, Towcester Museum is a meticulously presented, warm and welcoming museum, with plenty to offer every visitor. Upstairs, the museum currently hosts a compelling 'Road through History' exhibition which guides the visitor along a figurative incarnation of Towcester's own 'Watling Street', showcasing artefacts from the town in its various guises (Stone Age, Roman, Civil War, Twentieth Century and more). Visitors are sure to be pleasantly surprised by the vibrancy of Towcester's past, as indeed the town can be seen as a striking microcosm of the history of Britain as a whole.

Downstairs, the temporary exhibition room plays host to exhibitions of special interest, such as World War I, Towcester's own vernacular railway, art from local artists, and much more.

The museum is run by dedicated volunteers, who afford the museum its warm and friendly atmosphere. The shop is stocked with an array of very high quality gifts and souvenirs. Cast aside any prejudices regarding local museums; Towcester museum is an exemplar of how to celebrate a town's vibrant history with finesse.
