As well as staying in the premier inn attached, the food was fresh and tasty, steaks cooked to perfection. Excellent choice the following morning for breakfast and staff that go the extra mile to make you feel welcome

Went to Thyme Restaurant once this weekend for breakfast, while on an overnight stay at the attached Premier Inn.
Even though we arrived about 25/30 minutes before breakfast service was due to finish, we still received excellent service.
The buffet counter was stocked well.
They cooked some food on request for me and brought it over to the table, which impressed me greatly
A very nice touch was before they closed the hot food counter down, they asked if we wanted more
We were still sitting down at our table after breakfast service was due to finish, but we didn’t feel rushed to leave, which was excellent

This restaurant is part of the new Premier Inn at Thirsk (opened in March 2017). We were pleasantly surprised by how good the cooking, service and décor of the restaurant were – my wife and I were staying at the Premier Inn for one night.

We were told by one of the staff that unlike Beefeater, Brewers Fayre and Table/Table which Premier Inns usually have attached to them (like Premier Inn all owned by Whitbread), Thyme restaurants are internally run by Premier Inn itself. The menu refers to Thyme as “British Bar and Grill”, though – please note – Thirsk doesn’t have a separate bar! Certainly this restaurant had a very attractive design and ambience - open-plan, with a stylish look and lighting, full-length windows along two walls, and very comfortable tables and chairs designed by Whetstone Brothers, seating around 40. There is light background music.

As we discovered at breakfast the next morning, a Costa coffee machine provides very good, hot cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos and espressos, and chocolate. Liqueur coffees are also available. The wine list has a goodish choice of 5 whites, 5 reds and rosés, all available in 175 and 250 ml glasses, and bottles priced between £14-18. There’s a short list of spirits; beers are bottled and the labels seemed mostly artisan. We ordered a bottle of the (lovely) Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc, and tap water which appeared in attractive glasses with lemon and ice.

Our main server was Rob, who is a trainee manager. He was quite superb – dedicated, friendly, informative, attentive. I didn’t hesitate to leave him a tip at the end – not usual at restaurants attached to Premier Inns. He explained that one of the ovens had broken; however service still seemed to go smoothly for everyone.

The menu is short and to the point. It emphasises that this is a Grill, with steaks, chicken and gourmet burgers, pizzas, interesting starters, salads and sides, three fish dishes, one curry and smart desserts. 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 burgers and 2 salads are vegetarian.

We’d come on from a grandchild’s birthday party, and were fairly well-fed, so we just chose a mains each. My wife had Gammon Steak, served with pineapple, peas, mushrooms and tomato + a fried egg; I ordered Chicken Escalope, served with a mixed salad and a fried egg. Both also included chips, which we didn’t want, so my wife also had a small salad and I had coleslaw. Both meats were extremely well cooked – tender, moist/juicy and full of flavour. The salads were very fresh with a light dressing, vegetables tender and well-seasoned.

Though we only had mains and wine, we experienced an attractive space and décor, tremendous service, very good-quality cooking and fresh produce – and not at all over-priced. As a “Bar and Grill” – albeit without the separate bar!!! – Thyme at Thirsk does what it sets out to do very well, so 5 stars.
