“Our new year get away to Lan-Y-Mor”

Lan-y-Mor is the perfect get away for people looking to escape it all, whether a romantic break or just somewhere to get some peace and quiet, you will find it here.

We arrived in Virgin Gorda, were greeted by Christi, the lovely lady who takes care of Lan-y-Mor, who quickly showed us up to the house. On arrival we were greeted by a beautiful driveway that lead up to the stunning villa, which was only made better by the incredible ocean views the sunset side of the island.

Lan-y-Mor is based high up on the hill, we were the only ones up there with no neighbours. The house has lovely dipping pools to escape the midday heat, a BBQ for sunset cooking and a fully equipped kitchen. Our recommendation for nights in? Have rum punch sun downers and watch the sunset over Tortola, then kick the BBQ into action and get cooking, then perhaps take a night dip in the house pools! The garden is beautifully lit up at night so it’s worth taking the time to chill out there at night!

The master bedroom is on the top floor with a massive 180 degree window that looks out right across the water, what a view to wake up to! The bed is incredibly comfortable and the room is air-conditioned so you can sleep comfortably.

During the day we suggest you pack the boot of your car with beers and lunch and head to Spring Bay where there are beautiful crystal blue waters and impressive rock structures. From there you can also snorkel around to the Baths. Come nightfall, if you choose not to stay at Lan-y-Mor we cannot recommend CocoMaya more, the sushi is fabulous and the drinks even better!

Our stay really enabled us to switch off and get away from it all. Lan-y-Mor is a private little piece of paradise and a must for your bucket list. To those people still to visit, unwind and enjoy…

“Mixed Bag that you don't see in the photos”

I'd love to give the place 4 stars but there were several issues that came up that potential visitors need to be aware of.

Water from the plumbing - is gold to brown and we were advised not to drink it by the management company. Could be from the metal roof collection system or heavy rain causing dirt from nearby to wash into system. But we had to buy bottled water to use and we weren't expecting that or told of that in advance.

Mosquitos and bugs - get inside the upper and lower part of the house very easily as the residence isn't really sealed. So expect to be bitten in the middle of the night and while just hanging out. My wife had to sleep in bug spray lotion and still got bit. Only thing that helped was keeping the air conditioning on the cold side. While the lower part of the house has screens, there are massive holes and gaps that let bugs in while you are trying to eat or cook. No fun. Felt like we were camping.

Kitchen - there is no real (normal sized) oven, just a stove top missing dials and microwave and toaster. The oven there we could not get to work. You can't cook a frozen pizza so shop accordingly. The refrigerator won't fit much and the freezer part will not do the job. And there is no dishwasher so many of the pots, pans and cooking items were on the dirty side.

TV - there is no satellite or cable tv. Just a DVD hooked up. So while being on vacation is nice, we didn't expect to be totally marooned from news or some relaxing downtime in front of the tube. The wifi was not very consistent and was down several days during our trip. So for those thinking you'll just go to Netflix, expect it to be down here and there.

The only other negatives were rockslides on the road. One chair sized rock came within a foot of our rental car.

we didn't really expect or want housecleaning renting a house but they managed to come twice in the week when we were away even though we are quite self reliable.

The good to great things - views are wonderful. Privacy was excellent. The beaches were beautiful. The baths relaxing. There is a waterfall next to the pools and bedroom that is heavy after rainfall. It was very nice to have a washer and dryer for clothes. Bed was comfortable. I'm not sure there are any better choices for the money. So hopefully they can address these issues for future visitors so they can better enjoy when away from the beaches.

Management Response

Dear Robert, thank you for your review. We are very pleased that you were able to enjoy the sound of the natural waterfall and the wonderful views during your stay.
I understand there were some unusual heavy rains during your stay which can lead to an increase in mosquitoes. I will however, check with our management team regarding any holes in the mosquito screens.

We strive to use only desalinated water for daily use in the house but when there are heavy rains unfortunately the water from the roof does collect in the cistern thus giving the water a discoloured appearance. It is quite safe for general use. Bottled water is ALWAYS recommended in the islands despite the whole house filter we have installed. We do not advertise cable or satellite tv and in the event of occasional inclement weather the internet, I'm afraid can be intermittent. Unfortunately this is out of our control.

Kind regards
