“Practically perfect in every way!”
Reviewed 22 February 2013 for a stay in February 2013

I stayed at Ivy Cottage with my partner and four friends for a short weekend reunion during February and to be honest, we all wish we’d stayed longer!

First of all it is in a lovely location. Not only is Winster a beautiful little cottage with cobbled streets and a lovely old worldly feel, but it is also only a short drive away from the Derbyshire towns of Matlock and Bakewell.

Ivy Cottage is instantly welcoming with warm, homely and traditional features. It is undoubtedly well loved, well cared for and full of charm. It has everything you could possibly wish for no matter what the time of year – warm fires in both the lounge and dining room, a BBQ for summer evenings, a beautiful garden, games, DVDs, books and televisions to keep adults and children entertained in the winter, and a kitchen that’s more well-equipped than John Lewis! Upstairs there are comfy beds a-plenty with extra blankets, pillows, and a gorgeous bathroom with heated floor, power shower and double bath.

I really can’t recommend Ivy Cottage enough. It is everything you want it to be – and more! We were all sad to leave and will definitely be coming back.

A big, big, thank you to the owners Matt and Becky, who made us feel welcome with a warm greeting and basket of essential supplies (tea, coffee, crisps, wine and chocolate!)

Top marks!

Juliet

“A cosy advent retreat in an inspirational, timeless Derbyshire location”
Reviewed 23 January 2013 for a stay in November 2012

We arrived on an icy November evening to find Ivy Cottage well-lit, warm and inviting. The owners had hung tasteful festive decorations downstairs and even though our group of 6 didn't include any children we soon found ourselves filled with the Christmas spirit, sipped mulled wine by the fireplace in one of the three living rooms. We enjoyed being away from the hectic pace of our home towns/cities yet at the same time made the most of the mod cons including satellite TV, modern kitchen and sound system. On the Saturday we took a bracing circular walk along the old salt route followed by a hearty meal in the nearby Bowling Green pub. We would definitely recommend Ivy Cottage and will return but add a Sunday night onto our weekend next time!

“Wonderful holiday cottage”
Reviewed 4 November 2012 for a stay in October 2012

We booked Ivy Cottage last minute for a long weekend, and trekked to Derbyshire with high expectations from the various reviews we had read. I can honestly say the expectations were surpassed.

The cottage was easy to find with parking for two cars. It had a typical peak district cottage appearance that you would expect in the traditional village of Winster, with the exception that it was at least twice the size of any normal cottage. This is understandable when you realise the cottage is actually two cottages now joined together with an extra extension added for good measure.

From our first step inside the porch you knew it was going to be good. The porch was huge, so everyone had plenty of room to get in to take their shoes and coats off. (just what you need if it is raining). The lounge is a fair size with a huge tv, sky, dvd and cinema sound. The games room is a great bonus. I’ve known other holiday cottages supply a few games and a couple of dvd’s, but Ivy Cottage had a wide choice of games and toys for toddlers, along with a large selection of dvd’s and a PS2 with many games. The kitchen is excellent and very modern with everything you could want. One bugbear of ours at other holiday cottages is they only supply minimal plates, cups, mugs, glasses etc, necessitating frequent washing up, but Ivy Cottage supplied more than enough of everything that we could have lasted the whole break if need be without ever reaching for the washing up liquid. (not that we needed washing up liquid, as there was a dishwasher). The dining room was fine with a selection of books and CD’s. The garden room was simply an extension of the dining room, but it was light and airy with a TV and Sky, so you could sit at the dining room table and watch the TV if you wanted.

Upstairs the main bedroom was fine and the second bedroom was huge, even with the extra bed included. The twin room was also fine and was certainly bigger than some third bedrooms we have seen. The bathroom was exceptional. A fantastic shower and a wonderful bath were complimented by double “his-and-hers” sinks. I’ve never seen the point of them myself, but they certainly gave the bathroom an air of decadence.

I should add the whole cottage was spotlessly clean. It was decorated to a very high standard. The downstairs rooms made use of the natural cottage features and there were a myriad of attractive and unusual ornaments and pictures to give the whole place a feeling of home from home. The welcome basket was also a nice touch. You could certainly not want for anything more. On the contrary, was there too much in the cottage? Does a cottage really need a cinema surround sound system or a cocktail shaker with margarita glasses? Perhaps not, but Ivy Cottage had them just in case guests needed them.

The garden was attractive, though not really suitable to play in, and there was a decking area with a BBQ, not that we got to use it in October.

In order to give a balanced review, my wife and I decided to list the things we didn’t like or felt could be improved. We really struggled. The most prominent of the negatives were the silly positioning of the TV and dvd on top of the wardrobe in the second bedroom (you would need to stand on a chair to actually change a dvd) and the fact the “sharp” knives in the kitchen were not sharp at all, struggling to cut through an apple. So if those two things are the biggest issues with Ivy Cottage, you know it must be good.

I would certainly recommend Ivy Cottage to anyone who wants to stay in this beautiful part of England.

Thank you very much for a lovely review. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay at Ivy Cottage and found that it had everything you needed and more!
Thank you also for your feedback, I will get the kitchen knives sharpened this next week, thanks for letting us know. I will have to see what I can do about postioning the dvd player in the family bedroom better. Being 6'4" myself its never been a problem for me to easily reach it but and I am glad you pointed it out.
Thanks again and we hope to see you back at Ivy Cottage in the future.
