“We'll be back!”
Reviewed 19 May 2011 for a stay in April 2011

That 'ronseal moment' - you've turned up and, yes - it does what it says on the tin, it is as pretty as the picture, the welcome is as warm as promised, the sun is shining and the wine is chilled. What more could we ask for? And if we did, Charles and Adelle were always quick to respond, although they had ensured we didn't need them much.

All the promised facilities were there; our mobiles (we are all on Vodafone) could be added to the broadband hub so we were easily contactable and the kids could surf on the laptop. Bedrooms and lounge were comfortable. Kitchen is a bit tight once everyone is sat round the table but, apart from me (the cook) no-one needed to spend long in there.

The rear entrance isn't as 'polished' perhaps as the rest of the property but doesn't really let it down. Parking right outside wasn't possible but it wasn't much of a distance - nearest to the back of the cottage but less suitable that way if steps are a problem.

There was an excellent array of guides to walks in and around the Peak District. There are good walks from Tideswell itself and loads more near at hand (15-30 minutes drive). Chatsworth, Bakewell and Buxton add various other attractions. We were out and about every day (in unseasonably warm and sunny weather all week) but it was nice to come back and sit out on the patio, overlooking the valley, read a book and sip a cool beer. Once the evening cooled, the widescreen TV , Freesat, and a good supply of DVDs and games in the cottage always gave us something to do.

Tideswell has pretty much everything you need within easy walking distance (although it is uphill on the way back to the cottage). We always do a main shop on the way (good big supermarkets in Bakewell or Chesterfield, which has cheap petrol at Morrisons as you go past from the M1) and then top up as needed from the local Co-op (open until late), good butchers, fruit & veg, nice baker's/deli and cake shops . The cake shop does nice ice-cream and aslo teas etc. There is a post office/newsagents/store, bank (with outside ATM), two fish and chippies, and enough pubs and restaurants in and around to save you from cooking all week if you feel inclined. Tideswell is a very clean and pretty village although some of the roads are narrow and patience is required sometimes (try to avoid getting stuck behind the bin lorry!).

Since our previous visit the Tideswell School of Food has opened and I booked on to an evening course on cooking fish, which was really good. If you are in to cooking, baking or brewing then check them out.

This was our third visit to Tideswell but the first time that we would definitely come back to a property.

Management Response

Thank you very much for this very informative and positive review! We are very glad you enjoyed your stay at Swift Cottage and hope you will re-visit us some time. Towards the end of this year we are planning some major improvements to the cottage, including the complete rebuilding of the rear entrance and the area housing the washing machine and spin dryer. Since your visit in April it has already been re-painted (in jasmine white instead of the original, rather off-putting yellow!), which has made a big improvement in itself.
