Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the medieval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Hawk & Owl Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

Well worth a visit to stroll through the grounds alone. Add to that the superb Birds of prey and Owls plus Heron feeding every day at 4. The castle is also a superb experience with full commentary with all visitors via hand held audio phones included to guide you through the castle. Fantastic place.

We walked here from the railway. It was further than we expected but it was a very sunny day. The gardens at Muncaster were extremely pleasant and there were spectacular views from the terrace. Would recommend

Being HHA members and staying in the Lake District a trip to Muncaster was a must, the grounds were delightful to stroll round. The castle itself had a lot of history and very interesting, but have to say the highlight were the Birds of Prey.We could wander around to see them and then at 11.30am we had a wonderful display by the various Owls, even the 8 week old Southern Boobook who they were training it was so cute. Good few hours were spent there and would recommend

As part of our stay at Muncaster Castle we had free entry to the grounds and owl display, and for a £2 upgrade we went inside the Castle. What a treat it was, we loved our visit and would highly recommend this historic place.
