I visited here for the first time having heard some fantastic reviews about the food. When we arrived the staff were friendly and prompt in giving us menus and bringing over our drinks. The pub was full but staff were still extremely observant and efficient.

I ordered the pie and my partner ordered the 12oz rump steak. When or food arrived, his meal looked absolutely gorgeous, and so much of it (it came with chips, a fried egg, black pudding and onion rings). My pie however was really disappointing - the pastry was hard and the filling was dry, thankfully it had gravy on top. It was served with veg which was well cooked and tasty. Unfortunately I ate the filling but had to leave the pastry. My partner ate his but considering it cost near enough £20 for his steak meal, he was left quite disappointed. The chips were to die for though.

As locals we will be back but food does need some improvement.

We are staying at Higher Swinside and needed a good place to eat lunch part way around a good walk. Perfect walking weather and even though we arrived earlier than expected we were accommodated quickly. The Wheatsheaf did not dissapoint. Excellent beers, friendly bar staff where nothing was too much trouble and delicious food. Large portions off Sunday lunch, vegetarian Sunday lunch complimented with vegetarian gravy. Managed to force down puddings of sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble & syrup sponge puddings which were all home made & delicious. We will be back in the summer to experience the delights of this beautiful valley.

We had heard a lot of good things about the wheatsheaf so we decided to give it a try. The food was decent but nothing special, apart from the onion rings! They are amazing.
We were suspicious that the mash that came with my girlfriends Cumberland sausage may have been instant mash .

The Eton mess is something to try, they serve a good portion.
The one thing that really spoiled the evening was the barman/waiter he was very cold and disinterested, he made it seem as if we were unwelcome. We had thought about leaving when we first sat down but decided to stay as we had traveled a little while to get there.

Give it a try, but I do think it’s slightly overpriced and the service needs a shake up...

Thank you for the review. We apologise for your experience with us. We pride ourselves on our homemade locally sourced food. We would like to assure you that our chefs would never use instant mash. We are looking into the barman/waiter issue raised within your review and will proceed with staff training and customer relations to make sure our service we offer is at its best.
We would love for you to try us again in the future as we believe you will be satisfied.

Many thanks.
