Dar’s has 2 very well-known reputations.
1) They are known for having amazing baked goods and the best butter tarts.
2) That the owner is a little….. “difficult” shall we say? In fact Rude, miserable, mean, cranky are all adjectives you hear.
Now, I love butter tarts, and am always on a quest for the best butter tarts around : the “butter tart quest”. So, when I heard Dar’s had ‘the best’, I had to try them.
Let’s just say that the reputation #1 is not completely accurate. The butter tarts are flavourless, dull, unexciting, and bland. The crust to filling ratio is perfect - a smallish crust with lots of filling. The way a good butter tart should be. The filling is thick, with very little ooze. They lack the decadence that one expects from a really good butter tart. There wasn’t that gooey sweetness, they were not very sweet at all. The crust is flaky and flavourless. Absolutely nothing special about the crust.
Reputation # 2: yes, that one seems to be a truth. There is definitely a lack of customer service here. She may have a reputation for making amazing baked goods, and feels she can rest on her laurels, but unfortunately, I was not impressed with the butter tarts that I hear so much about.
