For over 15 years, Tide Rip has been leading daily boat-based expeditions to view and photograph the wild grizzly bears and other spectacular wildlife native to coastal British Columbia. This trip was really enjoyable. Tide Rip operators respected the bears by keeping noise levels down and maintaining a respectful distance, at no point did the bears seem stressed out by our presence. Nate (Captain) and Charlotte (naturalist) made the trip enjoyable with a lot of humour and information about Grizzlies and black bears. Of course the bears were also pretty cool.

We drove to Telegraph Cove just to do this tour. What a great adventure :-)
This is in my eyes an MUST DO while visiting Canada. I know the tour is a little bit expensiv, but worth the money. When would you be able to observe wild Grizzly Bears in there natural habitat? We enjoyed the whole day and we had great guides.

On our way to Knight Inlet we could see some whales and bears along the shore. Arrived in Knight Inlet we were lucky to see about 12 Grizzlys, even some cups.

I will list out pros and cons to try to be fair with my assessment.
Pros –
- The boat ran

- The food was good

- The naturalist James was a nice guy and informative

- Cheaper in total than others but there is a reason – shorter amount of time on the water (hadn’t realized this one) and the boats are much older and decrepit compared to other companies. I saw the other company’s boats – no comparison.

Cons –
- Dirty, run down boat – we were in the Kamode. They had filled 2 boats this day, the Kamode and EagleCrest. Our boat was bigger but very, very old, in bad shape inside and out and a mess with stuff everywhere, it was difficult to even walk on the back deck. The dust is thick.

- The boat we were in was captained by someone who would not keep up with the other boat and wasn’t very interested in getting us near an animal. Even the naturalist became frustrated. The passengers certainly were.

- No communication between boats. The other boat had taken off to explore the coastline and we just sat in the same place watching the same bear in a very bad rain. I asked why we weren’t going with the other boat. No explanation. I asked why the boats were not communicating with each other – the captain replied “Mike forgot his radio”. So here we were stuck in the same place watching the other boat go out of site….so frustrating.

- Slow captain again – The other boat had eaten lunch and were heading off to see whales before we even started eating lunch.

- Whale watching – another boat had radioed that they were sitting in a certain area and there were orcas on one side and 50 dolphins on the other and where were we? She made her way there but would not stay with the other boats. As we watched a humpback breach twice in the distance I asked her if we could join the boats watching the orcas or the boats watching the humpback. She refused and actually shut off the motor and sat in the middle of the channel so we saw neither. The naturalist echoed my request and she would not move. Why? She said she couldn’t get any closer to the orcas – then why was the sister boat there along with 2 other boats. She said the humpback was coming toward us – it was not. I went back up to the top and told the other passengers that she refused to move – they were not happy and were very surprised.

- When we were asked we came back into the boat to return back to the dock – none of us brought up the situation but after a while the captain said “if you want to watch whales I suggest you join the whale watching tour later today”. Nice.

- As we made our way back to the dock a humpback popped up right next to the boat and the naturalist yelled for her to stop and she did…yea… we stop but only for a minute as we have to return.

In summary, do your homework – ask the age of the boats, do not book with Captain Jackie and do not go for overall cost – look at cost per hour and professionalism of the people on board. I would definitely not take Tide Rip Off for any other tour, ever.

We very much anticipated this trip as part of our Canadian adventure - seeing Grizzly Bears in the wild, what could be better? In fact the trip was so much more than a bear spotting tour. The boat trip to Knight's Inlet was absolutely spectacular, although the dolphins, humpback whales, black bears and bald eagles sometimes distracted us from the fabulous views. Jacqui & Laura were delightful, knowledgeable hosts and guides -able to give us personalised details of many of the 13 bears and 2 cubs we saw close up. Completely unforgettable day. Thanks so much!!!
