Description: Old Nags Head Cafe continues the Roderer family tradition of the great food and Outer Banks North Carolina hospitality we've been offering Nags Head restaurant diners since 1985. Housed in the historic Harris Grocery store on the beach road that served vacationers up until the late 70s, our café's easy-going, beachy atmosphere provides the perfect setting for a gathering of friends or a quiet evening. We like how one of our guests described us, "The restaurant/bar has a very neighborhood feel but is classier than your standard beach seafood shack. Lots of wood paneling and a tasteful amount of local flavor make it a great place for a low key night or casual date." We do strive to make you feel like you're a long-time local, even if it's your first visit, with our friendly servers and easy-going style. That's the way a Nags Head restaurant should be! Complementing our surroundings is a menu that's setting a standard for Nags Head restaurants. Enjoy traditional and contemporary Southern dishes as well as the best in fresh local seafood, chicken, chops, hand-cut Angus beef, pasta, soups, salads, sandwiches, daily specials and homemade desserts. We've been told you can't come to this place without experiencing fried green tomatoes or shrimp and grits! While you're dining, your view is of Nags Head's row of unpainted aristocratic cottages, summer homes that were the first to establish the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a vacation destination. You're also across from the iconic Jockey's Ridge. Old Nags Head Cafe also has a full-service bar with an extensive beer and wine list, and we're happy to accommodate your take-out order.

Four of us, (two couples) for dinner after trying a couple of other places with very long wait times. We thought we'd try this place for the first time. All four of us enjoyed our meals and would surely return. The restaurant was very quiet at the time (7:30-ish) on a Thursday evening. We were greeted warmly by what seemed like the owner. He was very friendly, and promptly took our drink orders. He also took our food orders and delivered the meals to our table. He checked back with us and engaged in conversation--very friendly. Three of our party enjoyed the shrimp and grits while I had the shrimp and chips (fries) . we were all very pleased and have now put it on our list for future trips.

We were on a 'shrimp' mission for a week to find the best shrimp. After a long drive the 1st day, we ordered takeout from Old Nags Head Cafe. They were the best of the entire week! Even takeout, the food was hot, and very delicious. Shrimp and scallops were fried perfectly. We also ordered an appetizer of fried green tomatoes - wow! Brought back memories of my grandmother cooking them - delicious! Service was great, staff very friendly, food was prepared quickly. Prices are typical, i.e., $12-15 for shrimp plate, appetizers $7-10 or so. They do not have hush puppies, but they were not missed at all!

My husband and I stopped in on a whim for dinner, and all I can say is WOW. The coconut shrimp was scrumptious and they gave you plenty. My husband had the fish and chips and thought it was very tasty too. The fried pickles were excellent also, thin and not limp in the middle. The waitress was very helpful and upbeat. Will probably end up stopping again before the week is over.

Remembered this place when it was just for ribs though that hasn't been there for a long time. Selected for lunch to see what new establishment had and because one in our group wanted actual liquor instead of just beer or wine which limited options. Had the place to ourselves first day. Server was on his first or second day and he was wonderful. Friendly, eager and attentive. I think it was the manager who came out and described the unusual crabcake, which came with minimal filling, stacked high and very lightly browned. Delicious for the eyes and the palet. Guys had pulled pork and pronounced it good but unfortunately they were out of Cole slaw which one felt was a missing piece. We like it well enough the following day to return. Another new to this place but long experienced server was nice but a bit unusual but the bartender who had not poured our friends drink the day before remembered the order and fulfilled it well. Talk about attention to detail. Think she gets very high marks. Regrettably, this days fare was a little more pedestrian, salads (fresh!) with protein and burgers, both of which just weren't special. If had been our first experience we might not have come a second time. This day it was a little more filled with patrons. We will give it another shot but isn't top of our list
