We really enjoyed our visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which is the second highest in the World. The visitors center is fun to visit and the views are incredible. It is a must see when visiting the Outer Banks.

This is an amazing lighthouse. The grounds are gorgeous and very well kept. All the rangers are very informative and friendly. In addition to the lighthouse there is also a museum to walk through at no cost. The lighthouse is a strenuous climb but doable by people of all ages. Narrow spiral stairs lead to the top. The views from there are spectacular. Well worth the climb. Nice day trip.

This is a must see. We got there and were in the first group to climb the 248 stairs to the top. This is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America. Pace yourself on the climb up and not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights.

Very interesting piece of history, that you would not now about unless you hear the talk. Well worth the walk to the top.

The Outer Banks alignment shifts here at Hatteras Lighthouse -is this why the water is warmer? Do not know but the lifeguards employed by Nat Park Service also make this beach more attractive. As do the adjacent Nat Park Lighthouse, museum and visitor center.
Hatteras Island is more than 50% Federal Nat Seashore so development is limited to cluster villages, some with centuries of history. The seafood here is often still swimming like the sharks and dolphins we encountered off the beach this year (as well as hundreds of crabs, lizards, pelicans and of course those pesky beggars, seagulls).

Mosquitoes are controlled much better than years past but unfortunately when breeze is from the southwest those biting flies are still a problem. Surfers like the beach around the old pier foundation and just up the road on the Sound is one of the East Coast's premier kite board and wind surfing locations- we kayaked there and my grandchildren also waded here looking at fish, crabs, etc.). Remember, the OBX is a series of islands about 1/4 mile to 2.5 miles wide but approx 75-100 miles long.

Though there are many oceanfront houses available ( 300 feet restriction from high tide line-Nat Seashore requirement) the 5, 10 or 15 minute drive to the Lighthouse Beach is worth the time ...plus no charge for beach (though Lighthouse and camping have admission price). Lovely vistas are no charge.
