Review of Villa Sassolini
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 weeks ago
What a wonderful experience.
It starts with the ascent to the hotel, what a magical location Tuscany at its best.
You arrive at the hotel and you don't have to say anything. everything is perfect ! An amazingly restored villa, everything is tastefully decorated. Every item in place. With an excellent and smiling team. The lovely pool area. The amazing view. There is nothing less than wow in this hotel. The food is excellent with the busy restaurant that lets you enjoy fine food meters from the hotel. There is spa and there are cooking workshops, but mostly there is love. Love for the place, love for the guests, love for the food. Just come and enjoy

We arrived to a hearty welcome from the Manager, Andrea. Nothing was too much trouble and we upgraded to a beautiful suite. The whole space has been carefully designed to suit contemporary living, with stunning artefacts, paintings, mirrors and a collection of wall mounted clocks created by the owner Marcello, who pain staking renovated the villa a number of years ago. Each room has a unique clock fashioned in metal, each telling a different time. Marcello also popped into the lounge to say “ciao” too. Clever hidden doors disguise service rooms and cupboards, each decorated with giant mirrors, ensuring the a cosy, homely environment.

The evening menu is small but each dish perfectly produced with local ingredients and a reasonable selection of wines, many options for local Chianti, along with vino from across the country.

Each bedroom or suite is individually designed and Andrea offered a tour to view a few options for our next visit. A private spa, with small plunge pool, sauna and steam offered a chance to unwind and relax. A small gym, with treadmill too.

The most breath taking feature is the view from the terrace and outside pool. You can literally see have the Tuscan landscape and mountains in the distance. Ever changing throughout the day, as the light, clouds and even occasional rain, float by.

We spent our 20th anniversary in one of the suites. The hotel is amazing and the staff even better!

The upside:

1. The hotel is gorgeous, the grounds around it are beautiful. Our suite was massive and well appointed.

2. The staff and owner were as good as they come. They were very attentive and responsive. We got in late from our flight and missed dinner. They offered some light fare for us, we declined, but had a nice bottle of Chianti we enjoyed outside on one of the patios. Their house Chianti is excellent.

3. An absolute must is the cooking class. I grew up in the restaurant business and I learned a ton, plus the food was excellent. We had a ton of fun and it was just us. Definitely do this if staying there.

4. The little town it is in is very charming. My wife’s picked fresh figs from the trees around the area (we also saw tons of olive trees, prickly pear cactus, and pomegranates), and there is a cute little bodega where we enjoyed a sandwich and beer.

5. We had dinner one night at the hotel. The food was great and it’s a cute little dining room (also used for breakfast).

6. It’s close to a number of wineries and we ended up doing a wine tasting one evening and an olive oil tasting. We ended up ordering a case of wine from Rocca di Castagnoli and 3L of olive oil after a tasting at the olive farm next door. When driving to the vineyard we went through some backroads and on the way back we saw at least a dozen wild boar and a few deer as well. That was cool.

The couple of items to consider:

1. You need a car. This worked great for us as we wanted to see several different cities. We drive to Siena and Arezzo, and drive to the train station to get to a Florence. There are some nice and surprising large supermarkets in the main town of Montevarchi about a 15 minute drive. It’s a good midpoint between many main cities in Tuscany and the train station was very convenient.

2. The only real downside were the mosquitoes. This was not the hotels fault obviously but they were everywhere, including our room. We made the mistake of opening a window one night as it was so nice and for the rest of the stay we got bitten each night and it made it difficult to sleep with all the buzzing.

Overall, it’s one of the nicer hotels we have stayed in. Our room was well decorated and very unique, almost an apartment rather than a hotel room. If you are planning to visit a lot of places and want a single place to stay while in Tuscany you can’t beat the charm, luxury, and value.

Room tip: Take the cooking class!

We spent two days here with the family. Junior suite and family suite. Rooms were large, luxurious and modern. Staff were incredibly accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Even catered for the granddaughter who needed dinner even before the restaurant was officially open. Nothing was too much trouble.
Restaurant was a short walk from the hotel. All the food was freshly made and excellent. Would happily return.

Fantastic place!

My partner and I had a wonderful experience at this magnificent luxury villa in Tuscany.

The rooms are wonderful, functional, and equipped with everything necessary for a great stay. The hospitality is excellent, and the staff is very kind and helpful. They always promptly assisted us with any requests and also provided recommendations for things to do and places to see.

The location is truly excellent, as it is situated in a typical Tuscan village, 20 minutes from Chianti, 40 minutes from Florence, 50 minutes from Siena, and 40 minutes from Arezzo. It is perfect for those who, like us, want to stay in a relaxing place and explore Tuscany with ease, as it is centrally located to all major points of interest. It also offers breathtaking views of the Arno Valley, as it is located on a hill.

Furthermore, one thing we really liked is that this luxury hotel also has a delicious on-site restaurant and an excellent outdoor restaurant called Vin di Vino, with beautiful modern interior design and very good local cuisine served with elegance. At the end of our day exploring Tuscany, it was always a pleasure to return to this place, both to relax and enjoy the good food. Not to mention the excellent pool, sauna, Turkish bath, spa, massages, and more!

In short, I recommend anyone who wants to have a magnificent and relaxing stay in Tuscany to choose this place!
We will be back soon 😁
