Our first room (2nd floor) had a bad smell in the bathroom. We brought this up with reception staff who acted surprised by this (although other reviews on TripAdvisor have also noted the odours). To their credit they did give us a new room on the 3rd floor which was better in terms of the smell but the shower drain leaked and wet the bathroom floor every time it was used. The rooms are in need of an update but are ok for the price. Air conditioning worked well. We ate dinner at the rooftop restaurant which was quite nice.

The Golden Tulip is an older hotel building in the congested heart of Stone Town. Our driver paid a shake down fee to even pull into the parking lot.
One positive was the hibiscus juice refreshment offered at check in at Reception. Delicious!
Unfortunately, the older building and dated rooms felt tired. Rather than reflecting the multi-cultural heritage of Zanzibar, the manager (or owner?) chooses to operate the Golden Tulip as a “dry” hotel. One cannot get a beer or cocktail at the hotel, restaurant or at the pool.
As we lounged at the pool our first afternoon, a number of children yelled at us from an adjoining building. Then, at the call to prayer, three children appeared at the pool and completed their ablutions IN THE POOL! while we sat there. It became apparent to us that there was no security on the hotel grounds. No idea if this is a regular occurrence or not.
We inquired of our tour company if we could leave the Golden Tulip and move to the next hotel on our tour, which we did (with much more enjoyable results).
An unsettling and unfortunate experience at the Golden Tulip.

Good hotel close to ferry to Dar es Salaam and walking distance to all city attractions. We stood here 2 nights and we found it for very good spot for your activities in the city. Hotel itself does not look perfect from outside but after you get in, there was no doubt about we are at the good place. Very friendly and helpful staff everywhere, room clean with everything you need, restaurant on roof top was very good and tasty with normal price. We eaten there breakfast and dinner and really can't say anything wrong, very tasty with good service. We been there again after we finished our holiday in Zanzibar for last dinner. Good internet connection everywhere! There is a swimming pool as well but we didn't use it. Very good experience and I highly recommend for stay in Stone Town. Thank you!

We arrived in Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam around 7 pm, from the port was very easy to reach at the hotel was just a walking distance, the hotel location is good because of being close to main attraction of Stone town.

The front desk was able to quickly move through the check in process and get us settled into our room. The room was spacious, all the amenities in a room work properly including A/C, hot shower, clean spar bath and very clean towels, small fridge, we were able to get a good night's rest both nights.

Breakfast was a part of the stay and included a buffet, tea or coffee and made to order eggs we real like it was tasty also the location of the restaurant on the rooftop is super b where you can have a view of harbor and ocean

The Wi-Fi with high speed is available, we accessed within in a room, the pool was clean and the lifeguard on duty was helpful.

We would stay here again if we returned to Stone town,

Room tip: The room that you can view the harbor and ocean / pool side

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Tulip for 3 nights, on reading some reviews we were a bit apprehensive well we needn't have been.
On arrival the reception staff were extremely helpful, we were given an upgrade and our room was great. The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

All the staff were very friendly and always helpful we couldn't fault them.
The pool area and roof top restaurant are great.
We were never disturbed by noise.
I would definitely use the golden Tulip if I came back to Stone Town.
