The best travel experience we've ever had

Review of Asanja Ruaha
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2023
Where to begin? Asanja Ruaha gave my husband and I the best experience of our lives! From the start, Ajay in the office answered all our questions while booking, and when we missed our connecting flight, he was available and helped us rebook our local flights even though it was late on a Saturday night.

The location of Asanja cannot be beat; some of our favorite wildlife encounters and sightings were right at the camp thanks to its location on the river. While lounging at our room we had a whole family of elephants walk right by; while eating breakfast we watched the impala and water buck drink from the river; while watching the sunset we saw baboons and buffalo. Some nights they even made a fire for us as we sat under the incredible stars. The rooms are big and comfortable, sleeping with all the fresh air felt so good, and the food was delicious and plentiful. We were always so full!

We were so happy we came to Ruaha instead of the Serengeti. We saw only a handful of other cars each day and most animal encounters were all to ourselves. Thomas, our guide, is an encyclopedia. He knew everything about the animals from social and eating habits, gestation periods and lifespans, to the incredible diversity of birds and the local geology. We were happy to see it all. Safari is not a zoo, and no guide can magically produce incredible animal sightings hour after hour, but Thomas always made sure we were learning something, even if it was about the trees or termites (which are crazy!). And we were also lucky enough to see everything we hoped for--lions, elephants, giraffe, zebra, kudu, warthogs, buffalo, eagles, owls, even a leopard, and so much more.

The last evening we went on a walking safari with Prosper the hotel manager, who was extremely knowledgeable and also had incredible experiences working in west Tanzania with the chimpanzees and Jane Goodall. We were kept safe by Rafa, the onsite Massai and always felt protected and in good hands. We loved getting know everyone on the staff--they are all incredibly kind, dedicated and thoughtful people. It's not an easy job living in the bush, being away from families for weeks at a time, but it really felt like they've created their own family at Asanja, and we were so happy to be part of it for a short while.

Dear Tesscanfield,

Oh, what a wild ride your review has taken us on! Asanja Ruaha here, ready to break out the virtual confetti because your journey with us sounds like a whirlwind of awesomeness that left us grinning from ear to ear.

Our Ruaha Location... Well, it's like Mother Nature herself decided to put on a private wildlife show just for you. Elephants parading past your room, impala and water buck having a little river party during breakfast, and sunset serenades by the baboons and buffalo – seriously, did you accidentally stumble into a Disney movie set? 🌄🐾

We're convinced that the stars have a soft spot for Asanja because they seemed to twinkle extra brightly for you. Those fire-lit nights under the star-studded sky must've been pure magic. M y stay at Asanja Ruaha was nothing short of spectacular. The attention to detail in the room design, including the mesmerizing blue plunge pool, created an ambiance of luxury and comfort that exceeded my expectations.

Waking up each morning to the breathtaking view of the river just in front of the camp was a highlight of my trip. The sight of animals strolling by in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring and gave me a true sense of being immersed in the wilderness.

Now, let's talk about the food. It was an absolute culinary delight! Every meal was a gastronomic adventure, with flavors that danced on my taste buds. The chefs at Asanja Ruaha have mastered the art of combining local ingredients to create dishes that are not only delicious but also a reflection of the region's rich culinary heritage.

However, what truly set this camp apart was the exceptional staff. Their warmth, attentiveness, and genuine care for the guests made me feel like a welcomed member of their extended family. Whether it was sharing stories around the campfire or receiving expert guidance during game drives, their dedication to ensuring an unforgettable experience was evident at every turn.

Asanja Ruaha is more than just a camp; it's a gateway to an extraordinary adventure in one of Africa's most iconic national parks. I left with a heart full of gratitude and a longing to return to this hidden gem in Ruaha National Park. It's a place where the beauty of nature, the pleasures of fine dining, and the warmth of hospitality converge to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Room tip: Bring a jacket on game drives as it can get chilly! But besides that enjoy every moment :)

We have been to many camps around Africa. But Asanja Ndembo was one of its kind. From the earthly colours of the whole camp to the cooling plunge pools we had it all.

All the rooms have best views towards the river where you can see wildlife all day along.

    Food and staff outstanding.

Our guide Prospher was the highlight of the trip on the walking safari we had. The whole expereince was outrageously perfect 7 star.

Going to begin by singing its praises
    - Seriously fabulous Tents - Large spacious, huge King/Queen comfy bed, with view to die for (sunrise and daylight when blinds are raised), tastefulyl decorated, sofas and easy chairs, desk, wardrobes, bath (free-standing), In & Out Showers, Loo (of course), easy walk to main Camp, Bar and Restaurant, but beware Wildlife can & did walk between the tents - Leopard & Elephants - escort during dusk & dark hours is essential
    - In Camp service was exemplary - meals, beverages, waiters etc
    - Food was top notch, so Condiments to the Chef.

    Facts:
    - The National Park at this time of year is dry to bone-dry, so dusty and rock hard - driving is tough and requires some care. We believed off-roading was NOT Allowed, but it was done constantly.
    - Approx 3 Hrs drive (quite tough too) from Iringa, the nearest sizable Town

    Issues:
    - We arrived 14.00'ish on Day 1 & found No Guide & No Vehicle available till approx 18.30, by which time it was nearly dark, and we were warned 'Night Drives are a waste of time'. So NO Safari Drive or Activity of any sort on Day 1. Their Only Guide and Only Vehicle were busy elsewhere. We were the Only Guests & had booked months ago - go figure
    - Day 2 (assumed as some form of apology) was an All-Day Safari with picnic lunch. Every Sighting was prefaced by frantic mobile calls & messages (getting more precise directions it appeared)
    - Lunch picnic was good.
    - Vehicle was in a shocking state & the noise from everything that rattled, clanged and shook was dreadful. Vehicle Maintenance Dept is definitely Under Budget. a little lubrication and some rubber studs would make a massive difference
    - Birding was very disappointing. Knowledgebase was basic at best.
    - Day 3 was our Departure Day, but the Morning Game Drive was deemed pointless as we would have to Drive past the East Gate to get to where there was some Game, then back to camp to collect our Vehicle, then Drive to the East Gate again - 3 Hrs in total. We then faced a 3 Hr Drive back to Iringa.

In Summary - Poor - Very Poor
