Holiday of a lifetime

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Jul 2024
There aren't enough superlatives to describe how wonderful Ikuka is.
The views, the food, the guides, the whole staff team and the beautiful Ruaha and wildlife. Chevy - our host, was so incredibly kind and thoughtful.
We were looked after so well. The rooms are incredible with the biggest comfiest beds you will ever find. Every detail is thought of and the owners and staff genuinely put their hearts and souls into giving you the best experience.
I've never felt so at home on a holiday and this is down to the team caring so passionately.
Ruaha itself is gorgeous. You will see so many animals and have a genuine experience, 99% of the time with no other trucks. It feels so wild and empty. Our wonderful guide Festo taught us so much about the animals and his love for his job and nature shines through
If you're looking for a safari just book here.

Thank you for giving us the holiday of a lifetime.

Ikuka is a luxury camp, no doubt about it. Every comfort is considered from the furnishings in the tented rooms to the hot water bottles on morning game drives. The main area is stylish, and the food is simply delicious. But you can find luxurious camps elsewhere. What you can't find elsewhere, what makes Ikuka so very special are two things: its people and its location.

During our stay the camp was hosted by Chevy and Tommy with warmth and enthusiasm. They are brilliantly supported by a team who were attentive, charming and friendly at all times. It's such a happy place.

For us, the stand-out star was Festo, our guide, who was knowledgeable and inspiring, sharing stories about the individual adaptations of animals and birds. He also has a wicked sense of humour while always being a consumate professional.

And then there is the Ruaha. Vast but unspoilt, full of game but empty of people, breathtakingly beautiful but also haunting and wild. We had some fabulous leopard sightings as well as wild dog, elephant, lion, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and zebra while also learning about and seeing the smaller mammals, birds and reptiles.

My daughter and I had a wonderful time and there is nothing we would change. Thank you to each and every one for such a brilliant stay.

Room tip: Great laundry so you don't need to pack too much In June there were no mosquitos at all although although every care was taken (nets etc) Take good binoculars

Where do I start to try and summarise our wonderful trip to Ikuka. My wife and I recently stayed at this wonderful camp. We chose Ikuka because of the excellent reviews we read and the thought of staying in a camp with such wonderful views was appealing . Both the reviews and the views where exactly as discribed, Ikuka is an absolutely stunning camp with the most amazing views.

We stayed in the family room and, WOW WOW WOW , that I think explains it all. We couldn't believe how wonderful it was! We even had our own resident chameleon, which we called Keith. Waking up and returning to such a breathtaking room was a joy in itself but when you add the absolute wonderful staff, then you really do have the perfect combination.

The staff where all exceptional in making sure we had everything we wanted and making sure our trip was everything we had wished for. They achieved this and more. Special thanks go out to Tommy and Chevvy, the most perfect hosts in every way. From seeing us off every morning to greeting us back each evening after our drive with cool towels and drinks. From the moment we arrived they made us feel so welcome, like we were family. All the staff as I said where excellent, you can see that their priority is customer satisfaction but it's not intrusive, it's not over the top, it's just perfect, all so welcoming happy and polite. You really do feel at home and it makes leaving so very hard.

Another special thank you goes out to our guide and driver Idris, he was perfect in every way, his passion for his job and for all the wonderful animals shone through. He made every moment on our drives very exciting and very special. The lovely sundowners each day and we can't forget our first wild dog chase, we got the call a pack had been spotted, we was off, the chase was on, up and down back and forth, then, there they were a huge pack, it was so exciting. We felt so privileged to not only see the dogs but to be in the hands of such a great guide. Also special shout out to all the other staff that made our stay so wonderful! From sief and Davies to Freddy who made sure we was accompanied back to our accommodation each night safely and Luca who we got to know on our last day. . The camp is truly breathtaking but the staff make it even more wonderful.
The food was excellent and my wife who is vegetarian was very well catered for. You could sit together as a group for meals in the evening or sit by yourselves, again a choice that made you feel completely comfortable. As we had such an amazing room we choose in between drives to have lunch in our room looking out at the amazing views then we would join the other guests in the evening to talk about what we had all experienced that day, and it was nice to get to know the other guest's, we met such lovely people and really enjoyed all our time together. We celebrated my wife's Birthday on our lady evening and all the staff made it such a special day for her, we had our own private table for dinner and a special birthday cake was brought out by the staff at the end whilst singing to her. Amazing.

Tommy and Chevvy, thank you both so much for making our first visit to Ruaha Tanzania such a truly wonderful experience. Please thank everyone at Ikuka from us.. From the absolute amazing Drives each day to the wonderful experience back at the camp. You all make Ikuka such a wonderful happy amazing experience. We really do hope to see you all again soon.

      Asante Sana.

      Nick & Kym.

We have just spent four days at Ikuka as part of our honeymoon. We’d count ourselves as fairly experienced safarigoers (my husband used to live in Kenya) and it is safe to say that it is the best camp we have ever stayed at.

They really have thought of every little detail here. The tents are every bit as stunning as the pictures suggest and the little touches such as amarula when returning from an evening game drive safari wildlife checklists for each guests make such a difference. During our time there in June the temperature was perfect but there were fans in all of the tents if needed. The only challenge we had was deciding whether to go on a game drive or whether to relax at camp to enjoy the ridiculously beautiful views.

With all that being said, the thing that stood out to us most about Ikuka was the people. There was no ‘weak link’ in the team. Everyone spoke excellent english (to compensate for our terrible attempts at Swahili) and nothing was too much trouble for us. Camp managers Tommy and Chevy were always there to greet us at the end of a game drive and the communal dinners every evening were lovely. It was great to spend time with one of the e owners, Mark when he was at the camp. It’s clear he takes a lot of pride in the place. Festo our guide was also so knowledgeable and experienced. Thank you so much again - we hope to return!

We are going to run out of superlatives…. This was the best safari camp we have stayed in (and we have stayed in few). The attention to detail was second to none from the beautifully laid tables to our lovely banda. We wanted for absolutely nothing apart from a break in consuming the delicious and abundant food! The quality, variety and finesse was extraordinary. We had not been to the Ruaha area before and to have found a spectacular spot literally be on top of the world was so fortunate. The star at the top of the tree however, was the Ikuka team. Each and every one, with Tommy at the helm, could not have been kinder, more helpful, full of good humour and fun. They all contributed to an atmosphere of a closely knit family, looking out for each other and ensuring we all felt welcome and at home. It is a shame not to be able to name every one, but we were fortunate to have Idris as our guide, who not only was articulate, knowledgeable and informative and gave us some thrilling “challenges” (it was the rainy season), but with whom we shared much laughter and fun. We saw the animals in beautiful health, which was such a treat. Keep doing what you are doing Ikuka and asante sana sana sana for a truly memorable time.

We have traveled to many places, far & wide, but the level of excellence at Ikuka, has to seen, to be believed!
From the moment we got picked up at the local airstrip, until the time we left, the service from the manager Tommy, his barman Seif, our driver Idris, and everyone else involved, in making this a luxurious place to visit, it just couldn’t have been
      any better!
Ok, let’s start with the camp itself. It was spacious, with a beautiful dining area, looking out on a view, that you couldn’t beat anywhere else!
For relaxation, there is a lounge with beautiful leather couches, and numerous books on the resort & the wildlife, to read!
The rooms themselves were truly beautiful, with an 8 foot wide bed, with nets all around for when you sleep. There is also a seating area for you to sit and read!
Above all though, from your bedroom, is the gorgeous view, looking down from 0ver the bush. You can relax on the deck, with your favorite cocktail, looking out forever, it is breathtaking!
If you’re a stargazer, your room has a telescope to amuse yourself with!
Finally, our guide Idris, was such a nice person to be around, from driving us to look for game, to serving us with a delicious breakfast and sundowners. Also, his knowledge for the animals was very, very impressive!
All in all, don’t spend hours searching for a safari camp, take my advise, and book this place as soon as you can!

Room tip: Lose wight before arrive because the food is delicious and plentiful! Don’t pack too much, because Iluka will wash clothes daily for you!
