we stopped off on our way from drakensberg to Johannesburg and what a lovely surprise ! we had breakfast and got chatting to Jenna & Megan (owners) and met Mungo the cute puppy with a sad story but happy ending! its so nice to go to a family run business and hear a little about the story behind the business. Our food was delicious and definitely service with a smile- thank you guys.

On this occasion we only popped in for lunch, we stayed over on a previous trip. Great little pub and restaurant with delicious food. A family run business - do ask for Simon or the “Phatt Chef” as he is affectionately known. It makes for great stories over a drink in front of the fire. The pepper steak pie is to die for, but so is most of the food on the menu. Great variety at an affordable price. Do make time to visit Megan’s little trading store.

Based on other reviews we decided to try Phatt Chef. We were totally disappointed by everything. My wife ordered a baguette with warm beef strips with tomato relish. Well this was partly true but this was not a baguette, it was not really warm, the relish was over sweet and the beef was full of sinew. I ordered the chicken pie with mash and vegetables. Imagine my surprise when the chicken smelled of fish, the mash tasted like disinfectant and the vegetable ( not plural) was warmed pickling onions. Everything was prepared without care and even the water bottle lid was full of fungus. Don't bother!

Dear Neil,

We are terribly sorry to hear about your bad experience at The Phatt Chef. I have spoken to the kitchen and The vegetables should have consisted of more than just onions.

Our tomato relish is one of our famous relishes and people come to the phatt chef just to get a taste of our relish, but then again that is preferential taste to sweeter than savoury.

I have had a taste of the mash potato and I can assure you it has gone nowhere near any disinfectant and is freshly made daily. It is strange that you say the chicken tasted of fish because we don't have fish or any type of seafood in our kitchen and the chicken was cooked that same day.

The roll used was our standard baguette roll and we have never had a complaint regarding the size of the roll. I also checked the rump that was used for your steak strips and all sinew had been removed.

We are sorry for your experience.

Kind regards
Jenna

It was such a pleasant stay and very good meal. Pub music on vinyl records and of our era 60's and 70's. Jenna made our visit quite special, even moving us to a larger more comfortable room. Stay over or just stop foe a meal, well worth it. Oh and do not be concerned about the stories of the Lady ghost! Did not see her. But very definitely will visit again.

Clean rooms in an old venue with lovely sandstone walls and wooden floors. A great and well stocked bar with an excellent chef. The scenery of the surrounding Drakensberg make this the perfect spot to get out of Gauteng for a weekend and just recharge.
