Holiday Escape

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 02 Jun 2024
One of the reasons we come back to Shangri-La Le Touessrok are the people. The staff are dedicated to making sure that you have no worries or concerns during your stay, and will do anything to ensure that happens.
Our butlers deserve a special mention (Kevin and Sada) for their ability to be present but unobtrusive, catering for our every need however small, making our holiday as stress-free as possible.
Our thanks to the staff who made our room look lovely in the morning and in the evening (Simla and others), and to the people who greeted us cheerfully without fail every morning for breakfast at Le Republik (Nivesh, Martine, Barion, Antoine), with a particular mention for the delicious pain aux raisins especially made for us each day. I would thoroughly recommend Chef Vijesh’s fluffy blueberry pancakes!
There are great recreational facilities including tennis, table tennis, archery and pool. The rec staff are friendly and helpful, with a special mention to Guillame and Ricardo for their friendly banter.
Our thanks to Chef Harry in Kushi for the delicious scallops and sushi.
It felt like nothing was too much trouble, you definitely get the impression that the staff want to give you the best experience possible, and it seems important to them to be able to deliver on that.

The hotel deserves its stated five star rating (the staff are excellent, and generally the facilities are very good, including the private island, well appointed rooms, and an excellent gym) … but for us personally it was only a 4/5 experience.

I should say upfront that there are zero issues with the staff, who are excellent: little problems (e.g. lost property) were solved quickly, and one big problem (relating to a deafening corporate disco right outside our room) was addressed satisfactorily. The housekeeping was faultless, as were the pool, beach and gym staff.

However, there are specific limitations and considerations (not all in the control of the hotel) that mean we would be highly unlikely to return:

Beaches: nice enough to look at but really poor for swimming and pointless for snorkelling due to netting enclosures - the water is in no sense paradisal. A genuine disappointment as this is something we value highly. Had we known in advance, we would not have booked.

Restaurants: Fine, sometimes very good, but in all cases prices far outstrip value. We deliberately chose basic room service options (burgers etc) for 6 of 10 nights, purely for financial prudence, though this kind of ruins one of the vital features of a good holiday, especially as ambling to local restaurants isn't viable... which brings me to...

General location: Remote, and very poorly connected. The local town is a 40 minute walk and is frankly charmless. We hired a car, but would not do so again as Mauritian driving is a joke - a dangerous joke.

Room: we were upgraded to a Frangipani suite - though this came at the cost of the actual sea view that we had specifically booked (instead, getting a view along the beach; nice, but not what we wanted). The main benefit of this seemed to be access to a mediocre à la carte breakfast, and as many sugary treats as we wanted from the mini bar. Our room - seemingly uniquely - didn’t have even have proper shelter for the balcony: a real issue in a place where it rains a lot. The room itself was spacious, clean and well equipped, but if we’d paid the advertised rate for these rooms, I’d have been furious - and I strongly suspect this specific room with its mediocre view and lack of balcony cover - is not given to actual Frangipani-paying guests.

Atmosphere: Fine up until the last 48 hours... indeed, booking a corporate “business holiday” for 260 South Africans (=majority of hotel), whilst families and couples are still on site, is dubious decision making at best. It is pure luck (we only had one day of this nonsense) that prevents this being an eviscerating one star review. Honestly it was just horrible, and completely ruined the atmosphere - had we been booked for longer/later we would 100% have left early. Corporate culture is exactly what we go on holiday to get away from - honestly it almost completely ruined the experience altogether.

Overall, I do want to be clear that this is an impressive, genuine 5* hotel - BUT - the value you get doesn’t always match the price you pay and - depending on your priorities - there may well be many better options open to you for the money.

Room tip: Arrange to feed the giant tortoises onsite!

Conferenced here for 4 nights. Location is outstanding. The hotel is quite spread out so a bit of walking between the room and reception. Breakfast was delicious, the spread is wide and healthy, caters for all tastes throughly. Rooms are spacious but somewhat dated. I understand they are closing down for the renovations so hopefully this resort will be back in its full glory. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful stay! This hotel is an absolute gem. The hibiscus wing of the hotel offers one of the best beach-front locations I have ever experienced. Staff are incredibly attentive and efficient, nothing seems to be a problem, any special requests are fulfilled without hesitation.

Two places are worth a special recognition:

Firstly, my favourite Indian restaurant - Safran. The food is out of this world, the restaurant has a wonderful ambience as well as fantastic waiters and kitchen staff. Dav, the head chef, radiates positive energy and shows a genuine care - an amazing personality.

Secondly, a fantastic kids club. Both of my daughters aged 6 and 9 absolutely love it. The staff are very caring and flexible, they know how to engage with the kids. At the same time they are responsible and trustworthy. The weekly programme they offer is varied and engaging. A really lovely place.

The hotel is about to undergo renovation, which in some parts is needed but it is the employees who make up for any minor imperfections in this lovely place.
