Great stay

Review of LUX* Grand Baie
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Jun 2024
We had a lovely stay. Kailash was particularly great in Beach Rouge, the breakfast restaurant, as we were vegan. His team was also really friendly. The food choice for breakfast was amazing with a make your own smoothie bar, and a juice bar, a range of plant based milks and many other options both cooked and cold.

The front office staff organised a lovely vegan cake for my husband’s 50th birthday. The hotel, décor and all the settings were lovely.

Overall we had a great stay and would definitely visit again. All the staff were great, including the ones at the beach – we took a wonderful dolphin cruise, used the gym / teen entertainment and the spa.

Went to Lux grand baie for a quick visit and for some coffee. The staffs were pleasant and welcoming. Shoutout to Salim from the coffee shop for his exceptional welcome and service. The café itself had a cosy atmosphere and the hotel is truly remarkable. Would definitely be back

This is hands down the best hotel we have stayed in. It was so good that we have already booked to come back.

The highlight for us was the whole water sports team that taught us how to monoski.

The rooms are incredible, food 10/10 and the staff are lovely. Everything was perfect! Thank you team.

First of all, it goes without saying that this hotel is beautiful. It is, however, style over substance in many ways. The floors in the corridors and stairs are incredibly slippery and dangerous - so much so they have A-frame “slippery surface” signs sitting everywhere. As someone with mobility issues this meant I had to take extra care everywhere. Ironically, it was my husband who slipped and fell, hurting his knee.
The control panel beside the bed is over complicated with no instructions for using it. The shower water pressure is poor. The black out blind is stupidly loud - every time we opened or closed it I worried our neighbours would hear it. The rooms aren’t particularly soundproof. We were kept awake on our first night by someone watching a film in the room below us, then woken at 6am by screaming kids.
Most of the staff are great but be warned that reception is very disorganised. It took us 40 minutes to check out. We also had issues with our room, asked them to be fixed and no-one turned up. Asked again the next day and we were assured they’d be fixed. They weren’t. We then asked again and the receptionist said that they’ll fix them while we were at dinner, then later assured us that the issues had been fixed. They never were. As one of the issues was a safety concern, this was very frustrating.
The food is outstanding. Ai Kisu was particularly lovely. Drinks are ridiculously expensive. We were at the Lux Le Morne the week before and the drinks were roughly half the price of here. I can’t see how they justify the prices.
Definitely make use of the beach activities and book a private snorkelling tour to Gunner’s Quoin if you can.
I really wanted to like it here and there are lots of great things about it, but I don’t think I’d stay again. It’s overpriced and the indifference regarding our concerns really irritated me.

Room tip: Check-in took nearly an hour. Checking out was 40 minutes so allow plenty of time for getting to the airport!

We stayed in a 2 bedroom residence. This was located over the pedestrian bridge on the other side of the resort. The residence was well appointed and designed in a modern, beach chic style. However, some things were over-engineered and could've been pared back for a more enjoyable experience. The main issue was the automated lights and blinds. There were preset options to have all lights and blinds on or off... but not individually. So every time you just wanted a side light or a low evening light on, you had to turn every thing on or off. And if you just want the lights off? Well the blinds are closing too whether you want them to or not. Not to mention, the blinds were extremely loud and clunky. What seemed like a convenient and modern touch, was actually very inconvenient and it would've been better to just have some old fashioned switches we could control individually.

The room despite this, was very large and spacious and had a nice deck and plunge pool. It seems to be common in Mauritius to not heat the pools though and in winter when it is only 27 degrees, it is not inviting to dip into an icy cold pool so we didn't end up using the plunge pool.

The design and layout of the hotel and all the areas is very chic, modern and trendy. It is clearly the place where cool people come to be seen. The rooftop bar Bisou has an amazing pool and view over the resort, however they made the strange choice to block out what could've been the best sunset view on the island by planting palm trees all along the balcony of the upper bar area so your view out across the beach is blocked! So strange to do this when this could've been an amazing sunset viewing spot. The swing over the pool could also do with maintenance as this is a perfect photo spot but the swing is now dipping in the water and needs to be raised.

The food at the main restaurant was good, albeit very expensive ($30AUD+ for a pizza). The breakfast selection was varied, but they use the system of ordering hot items ala carte and the remaining as buffet. It was a fine choice but certainly not the widest selection I have experienced.

Where Lux Grand Baie exceeds is in it's activities and amenities. The gym was superb, modern and very well serviced. The beach activities were fantastic and actually included waterskiing and glass bottom boat tour, which are usually paid extras. Unfortunately we didn't get to experience the rooftop active area as it is only open for booked activities, not general entry. It would've been nice if this space was opened for general access, as the running track would've been amazing to experience.

Overall, we had a great time at Lux. If you want a hip hotel with many photo spots and the opportunity to get dressed up and be in the heart of Grand Baie then this resort is a great choice. However, I would suggest to Lux that not everything needs to be complicated, and simplifying some things like the lights and blinds would make for a more premium experience.

Room tip: If you want to be close to the resort, the normal suites are a better choice than residences. Plus there is some road noise at the residence

We had a wonderful time at Lux. Our room was large and very comfortable. We could walk out on the garden level right to one of the three pools.
There is an upper level adult pool that was lovely. The spa is terrific with a fourth pool out doors as part of the spa. The breakfast was amazing…a huge selection with so many options along with the menu to order eggs and other options. We did the bed and breakfast and often ate light for dinner.
The staff is terrific on every level…housekeeping and all service to snacks poolside. Absolute 5 star property…loved it. We stayed at their sister property Salt of Palmar…less expensive and lovely. We did 4 nights at Salt and 5 at Lux.
