An Experience We Will Never Forget! (And Will Be Back)!!!!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 08 Jan 2020
My girlfriend and I visited Nungubane Lodge in December 2019. While we live in London, I am South African and have spent most of my holidays in the bush while growing up (i.e. this was not my first time). Being Norwegian, its was my girlfriend's first time in the bush - however, we were both equally blown away by our experience with Annouchka, Chris and the team.

From the moment we arrived we were warmly greeted by the full team, and made to feel immediately like old friends rather than new guests. The lodge is an intimate one, hidden away in the reserve and is bush luxury and hospitality at its finest. The rooms are large and private, secluded away from the main lodge with your own private terrace over looking the valley.

I have also come across many rangers in my numerous visits to the bush, however Annouchka was among the best!! Her ability to read the game's movements and behavior was second to none, allowing us amazingly close encounters with the elephants, while most importantly, making everyone feel safe and comfortable. Beyond her game ranging capabilities she's a lot of fun and made every drive interesting and enjoyable, regardless of sightings.

When visiting, ask Chris to make you his famous Stoffels Special, especially on a hot day by the pool. Chris was a fantastic host, with more than one story shared around the bar in the evenings/early mornings. If you're feeling up to it, ask about the German Monkey...! And if Chris doesn't remind you that you're not in Disneyland prompt him to do so, its an important part of the safety briefing.

The food was amazing, Ann and her team did a brilliant job! 3 course meals for lunch and dinner and delicious breakfasts. At one point we had to turn down dessert because we just ate too much (the food was almost too good to stop).

All in all our experience was beyond expectation. I had read all the brilliant reviews before going and worried it may have set my expectations too high, luckily they weren't high enough. Thank you so much to Chris, Annouchka and the rest of the team for making us feel so at home. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

We will back back for sure!

Room Tip: All rooms are the same, quiet, large and secluded, awayf rom the rest of the lodge and guests...

My husband and I had a return visit to Nungubane lodge with my mom in December 2019. The lodge is only a 3 hour drive from Pretoria and a great weekend breakaway. I don't know how it is possible, but our second visit was even better than the first. The staff are incredibly friendly and professional. The food was absolutely amazing and the game drives (safaris) were everything we expected and more. It truly is a thrilling experience.
Whether you are living in South Africa or visiting from abroad, this is a must visit spot!

We stayed for four days and it was amazing! When you arrive, the staff is introduced by name and each one of them is very interested and pleasant. The overall atmosphere is very pleasant and personal and you can even leave your doors unlocked at any time, without being scared, as nothing will happen. We felt extremely safe the whole time we were there.

The drives were great, we’ve seen many of the animals we wanted to see and Annouchka knows every animal and has interesting stories and facts. After the afternoon drives Chris knows how to receive his guests and enjoy them with drinks and nice stories. Next to this, Chris arranged some extra activities and we even set an extremely rare python free. Really cool!

The meals are really good with choices for each meal and the Boma braai is a good experience.

I would really recommend Nungubane to anyone who wants to have an amazing game drive and accommodation experience that feels relaxed and like home. 10/10!

The stay at Nungubane was great.
Accomodation : The Room #1 was great. The room is very spatious. A very big bed, a nice bathroom and Airco in the room.
Food : The food was good. The seating is special, since you sit at one table with all the other guests. (This was new for us and a bit awkward in the beginning)
We are not the fan of barbecue (or braai), so the first dinner was a bit of a down for us. The other dinner compensated greatly for that and we were fulfilled with what they had to offer..
The breakfast and lunch were abundant and very tasty.
Game Drive : The guides are THE BEST !!!! Bertus has a wealth of knowledge. In all our game drives over the years, he was the one that still taught me some new things. Anouchka is (for her newbie position ;) ) also very dedicated and knowledgeable. She went really out of her way to find the animals to show to us.
Staff : The kitchen personnel really did a great job in making every single time something delicious.
Chris (the head of the lodge) is a very entertaining person who pleases his guests with stories and drinks (to early morning)
All together : If we go back to SA, I would surely consider going back to this lodge.

We traveled from Brazil to this place on the recommendation of a couple of friends living in South Africa.

The experience was wonderful. We were very well attended and received. The staff are always very helpful and attentive.

Unfortunately, however, we were robbed. We left passport and money in the safe box. Someone stole 1000 dollars and 400 euros.

The safe box has a key and does not show much security. It looks like any key can open the vault. In addition, all rooms are keyless and open all day with access for anyone. Perhaps this policy should be revised to provide more security for guests.

We communicated to the manager, but had no feedback on the incident.

If you want a great experience, I recommend the place. If you want safe accommodation, unfortunately it is not the best place to stay.

We are glad to know from Mr Cecarelli's review that our Brazilian Guests had a wonderful experience at Nungubane and that they were very well attended and received.

The suggestion that that they had money stolen while they were at the lodge is without any foundation. Our Brazilian Guests spent three nights at the lodge - 26th, 27th & 28th October 2019. They came with a South African couple who were friends of theirs. They all left on the morning of the 29th October 2019. At no stage during their stay or before they left the lodge, did any of the party make any mention of any alleged loss of money. The first time that a suggestion was made was in a phone call to the Lodge at lunchtime on the following day, 30th October 2019, after they had traveled and overnighted in Johannesburg. And that phone call was not made by Mr Cecarelli or his wife but by the wife from the South African couple who were their friends. When I received the message, I immediately phone the South African lady guest. I also conducted an immediate and thorough investigation. No evidence emerged to support the allegation.

Mr Cecarelli states that he left money in the safe box. He suggests that any key can open the safe. This is completely untrue. There is only one key to the safe box and Mr Cecarelli had the only key. If Mr Cecarelli was missing 1000 United States Dollars and 400 Euros when he removed his money from the safe box, it is strange that he did not notice it.

Mr Cecarelli states that " we communicated to the Manager ". Neither Mr Cecarelli nor his wife have ever communicated with me or the Lodge since their departure. The only communication with the Lodge has been from the South African lady who traveled with them.

If Mr Cecarelli lost money or had it stolen after he left Nungubane Lodge, that is a matter of regret to us. But whatever happened, it certainly did not happen while he was at Nungubane. It is regrettable that such a damaging allegation should should be made without evidence to support it.

We recently stayed at Nungubane for 4 nights and just loved our stay! Welgevonden is a beautiful park with great wildlife, and very easy to get to from Jo'burg - just about a 3,5 hrs drive. The food was really great, and we loved getting to know the other guests. We also really enjoyed our game drives - Bertus was an amazing guide with such great knowledge about everything in the park! The lodge itself is beautiful - very authentic and beautiful rooms. What really made the lodge special though for us was the staff - led by Chris. Chris was really, really great - so friendly, personal, and he just went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay - it honestly couldn't have been better. He also seemed to have created a great team because everyone at the lodge was just really nice, fun, and helpful! We'd love to come back to Nungubane and I could not recommend it more!
