We are from West Virginia, and we know all about John Brown and the raid at Harper's Ferry. So, we were surprised to see his name up here. This park is beautifully kept, and it's free! You can't beat that!

No charge to visit the home, barn, and walk the grounds! Yet this historical site is as well maintained and as informative as many sites/museums that we have paid $5-$12 per person to visit. The site includes gravesite, original house and barn, many original artifacts, short video presentation, and a great deal of written information. Thank you to those who work hard to maintain this site and to educate us about the efforts of John Brown and his supporters.

I don't remember a guide that was so well informed and well-spoken. We listened to his talk to a group of middle school students ... they were very interested in the stories and were very quiet! The tour of the house and barn was extremely well-done and the grounds were immaculate. This was not on our visit schedule of the Lake Placid area and we are very glad that theLake Placid village information person told us about it.

Site is easy to access -- you are actually just in back of the Olympic ski jumps. You won't learn much about the Abolitionist movement here, but you will learn about Brown, his family, and what it's like to farm a small homestead in upcountry NY. Actually, the real hero of the story is wife Mary Brown, who raised 18 children and kept the farm running while all of the adult male labor (Brown & Sons) were off in Kansas and elsewhere changing the world. It's worth contemplating the sacrifices that other family members make on behalf of the political martyrs of the world. Tour is free and informative, docents are friendly summer college students.
