On a long road trip in Morocco we stopped here and had a wonderful tasty lunch in beautiful peaceful surroundings. Thank you, would come again if passing! The food was typical and delicious, some of the best we have had this trip.
Palmeraie is a villa located about 7km outside of the small dusty town of Tinghir (also spelled Tinerhir). It is along the main road that runs from Tinghir to Todgha Gorge, but the villa itself is set back from the road and about 6 metres (steeply) downhill from it. So you have to look very carefully for a sign, not the building itself.
I arrived after dark, and the taxi had to slow down to a crawl so that we could spot the sign. The area is poorly lit at night because it is outside the town, though its isolation also means it gets wonderfully quiet at night.
On finding the sign by the road, a new problem presented itself. How to get my handle-broken suitcase down the steep steps. Fortunately two village boys were playing nearby and they volunteered to help me with it for a 10 dirham tip.
The room was comfortably-sized. The bathroom was big -- too big in fact, because to warm the bedroom, I'd have to keep the bathroom door closed. But that meant that late at night and in the early morning, the bathroom got very chilly.
For its price category, Palmeraie met my expectations with these fixtures and facilities:
1. Climate control (air conditioner)
2. Wifi (although the signal was weak)
3. Electrical sockets to charge equipment
For its price category, I expected these, but were not provided:
2. Safe or lockable drawer
4. Complimentary drinking water.
The lighting in the room was good, the airconditioner effective and quiet. In the bathroom, hot water came on quite quickly. Water pressure and drainage were good. Everything was in working order except the shower head which was coming loose.
Breakfast was wonderful. It was super-substantial, complete with fruit.
I had dinner in-house on two nights. Being so isolated, it really was the only sensible option. But it turned out very well: the food was excellent, among the best I had in a month in Morocco. I'm not sure which of the three brothers did the cooking, but whoever he was, he's quite a chef.
As Palmeraie is situated within a palm grove, I hiked the next morning to Todgha Gorge through the grove -- a rather interesting walk in itself. It's not palm grove all the way however; after about 3 km, you find yourself just walking along the vehicular road for the next 3 - 4 km since the road is the only entrance to the very narrow gorge.
Owner Rashid was very helpful in driving me to the town the next afternoon to purchase a new suitcase. He took the opportunity to give me a personalised tour of Tinerhir's Mellah and other older streets.
His brothers were also very friendly, and made the stay most enjoyable. It's a pity that there isn't enough to do in Tinghir to warrant a longer stay.
Stayed here for one night in April 2015. The highlight of the stay was a 2-hour walk into the adjacent palmeraie (palm grove, plantations) along the river that flows from the Todra gorge. The common areas of the guesthouse are quite nice, and the dinner in the downstairs dining room was quite good too. The bedroom we had was quite small, and not suitable for anything else than sleeping (the upstairs bedrooms, which were empty, seemed to be quite a bit bigger.) We parked our car right above the guesthouse along the road going to the Todra gorge, from where it is a 100 meter walk steep down the hill on a gravel path. The dinner we had was good, and priced OK. The room should have priced a bit lower, considering how small it was, but our overall experience was still quite good. WiFi was advertised on the hotel booking site, but there was no WiFi operational (and we did not ask the hosts to fix this.)
We (Family with a boy of ten years) stayd 4 nights in April at the guesthouse and enyoed it very much. It`s nice to be awake from the steps of a dunky gooing down to work in the oasis with ist lokal owner, ore by the Sound of the birds.
Cooking was delicious and more than enough. Mohamad and the other members of the Crew have been very attentive and we liked sitting around, drinking tea and speaking french, german, englisch. We had a lot of fun!!!
