Kakuli Bush camp: breathtaking setting, nestled deep within the park

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 03 Jun 2024
We were utterly enchanted by Kakuli Bush camp's breathtaking setting, nestled deep within the park's majestic landscape. The camp's rustic charm and authentic ambiance, far from the beaten path, perfectly complemented the surrounding wilderness.

Our guide, Abraham, was an exceptional individual who went above and beyond to ensure our safari experience was truly unforgettable. We cannot speak highly enough of his expertise and dedication.

The camp's culinary team prepared exquisite meals, served with exceptional service and attention to detail. The rooms were comfortable and of a high standard, providing a serene retreat from the day's adventures. And the view, what a stunning view overlooking the river & many hippos.

The wildlife viewing was nothing short of spectacular, as we would have expected in this remarkable park. We are deeply grateful to the entire team at Kakuli for an unforgettable few days.

Omg what a beautiful location. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw all the hippos. Awesome. I felt like a queen during my stay. from busy Europe where something has to be done every day to one of the quietest places on earth, I immediately felt happiness. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. And also has great respect for nature and animals

The setting is breathtaking, high above the Luangwa River, home to numerous families of hippos who take a dip in the water during the day and stroll along the banks at night. The bungalow is very well appointed, with a bathroom containing 2 showers, one of which is outside, and the washbasin facing the river. The terrace area is covered at night with tarpaulins. The communal area is very well laid out, with different areas for drinks at the bar and for meals, and a campfire encourages exchanges between the residents, who are very impressed by their day's safaris. The staff are attentive and the cuisine is of a high standard, given the isolated location. Many thanks to the whole team

Check out the photos to see what this camp is like. It is a small 6-cabin camp right on the river. We heard the hippos a lot during the night and early morning. It felt like they were in camp with us and sometimes they were. The camp is on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. Except for the hippos, it is very quiet and peaceful.

Our guide, Friday, is also the camp manager and is amazing. He knew the answer to every question we asked. This is the only African camp we've experienced where the manager or assistant manager ate with us at some meals. We loved the family-style environment. The food was varied and excellent. The dining area overlooks a watering hole where we saw elephants and other animals frequently.

They fed us 6 times a day. Breakfast at 6am, during the morning game drive we got tea and cookies at 8:30am, then lunch at 11:30am, drinks and snacks at 3:30pm before the afternoon game drive, 5:30pm sundowner during the evening drive, and 8pm dinner. One evening they did a major joint sundowner beside the river with all the guests rather than an individual sundowner for each vehicle. Our last night we were the only guests in camp and they set up dinner for us outside our cabin.

We enjoyed day and night game drives and 2 walking safaris, complete with a guard with a gun. Our first night drive was the most exciting we've ever experienced anywhere because we saw mating leopards. Other than that, the highlight was seeing a leopard with its puku antelope kill in a tree. We checked on the leopard every day. Two days later a lion climbed the tree and knocked the puku to the ground so it could finish eating it. All the while hyenas lurked nearby hoping for scraps.

They have unusual zebras and giraffes there - Crawshay zebras and Thornicrofts's giraffes. We also saw elephants, hippos, buffalo, impala, puku, kudu, hyenas, leopards, lions, baboons, vervet monkeys, mongooses, genet, an elephant shrew and other animals, including water birds.

Overall it was a fabulous experience with great animal sightings, a lovely comfortable cabin, excellent food, and warm friendly service.

Finally got to take my 2020 trip in 2022! This was my second visit to Kakuli; my first was in 2018. I thought I'd add a review now since there dont seem to be any recent ones.

There have been some upgrades and refinements since my first visit - new fixtures and fittings in the bathrooms, chalets now have electric sockets (and a fan!), a swing seat on the verandah.

Happily all the other excellent services remain. The chalets are very comfortable - enormous 6ft beds (with mosquito nets), an en-suite bathroom and an additional outdoor shower. All bar one of the chalets face onto the river and the front is open during the day with canvas walls pulled down at night.

The main lounge area has a fire pit on a deck overlooking a water hole. There is a hide underneath. As ever, the food and service was excellent.

Most importantly - the guides are great, very knowledgeable. Great viewings - lions, elephants, wild dogs, leopard, zebra, hippo, baboon, buffalo, hyena, bushbuck, elephant shrew, monitor lizard, mongoose, african fish eagle, bateleur, malachite kingfisher, lovebirds, storks...
