Kuyenda Bushcamp is a must!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 06 Oct 2022
Kuyenda Bushcamp is like a little slice of heaven on earth. For four days in September 2022 I had the privilege of being a guest here. Fannuel greeted our group with a smile and a wave every time we entered the camp and was there to send us off with a, “Have a great day!” every time we headed out for drive. His clear love of his job was reflected in his smile and daily interactions with all of us who were staying at the lodge. Fannuel even went above and beyond bringing me a hot cup of tea (prepared just like I like it) every morning to my door so I could drink it while getting ready for morning activities. In addition to Fannuel, Aaron worked tirelessly to serve up great meals and always have a cold drink in our hands. He didn’t miss a beat the entire 4 days we were there. The entirety of the staff was wonderful but hats off to Fannuel and Aaron for being impeccable. Kuyenda was described to me as ‘basic’ but that is not the word I would use. I would say it is perfect. All the amenities you could wish for without spoiling the natural environment or masking the beauty of the landscape. Every day we saw elephants, giraffes, baboons, and even a honey badger grazing just beyond the decks of our chalets. We enjoyed a siesta each day after lunch for a few hours but I was never able to nap as there was just too much to take in and watch to waste the time sleeping. Our drives and walking safaris beyond the camp were also beyond imaginable. Guided by Steve and Shadreck we saw an abundance of wildlife as well as learned a great deal about landscapes, stars, vegetations, geography and on and on. There was simple nothing our guides didn’t know or weren’t willing to find out for us. They communicated in a way that was informative, entertaining and with such devotion to their craft that it was impressive. This is a must visit for all.

I have visited Kuyenda in the past and it is still one of my favorite camps in Africa. The camp was recently rebuilt. I was a little nervous the charm of the original Kuyenda would be gone, but the Bushcamp Company did an amazing job of maintaining the charm of this camp while making some modest improvements. Less is more when you are on safari and some elements of the safari industry put way too much emphasis on the "luxury" aspect. One should feel as if they are apart of nature, not separate from it surrounded by fancy amenities that serve zero purpose other than to look good in a fancy social media post. That is why Kuyenda remains my favorite camp in South Luangwa; everything you need and everything you don't. The attached, open air bathroom and shower is well done and I even had an elephant cruise by while showering off the dust from my morning walk and game drive.
The staff was incredible. Fanneul, the camp manager and one of the head guides for the company is such a nice and genuine human being and I have had the fortune to have had him as a guide on my first ever safari in 2009. One person that deserves special attention is the waiter, Aaron. Aaron deserves a company bonus for the work he does. Being a waiter in the bush is probably the most demanding job at a bushcamp. They are usually the first up and last to bed. Aaron takes incredible pride in his work and his attention to detail is special. He is such a sweet and gentle soul and makes you feel so welcome. He really made Kuyenda extra special. The rest of the staff were super special as well. The food was incredible. The service impeccable all-around.
The real special thing about Kuyenda is the walking, the finest I have been on. The landscape and terrain and the abundant wildlife make for amazing memories. The entire group (10 of us) enjoyed every minute of our walks. Many countries tout their walking safaris, but they pale in comparison to a walk in Zambia. Zambia walking safaris are proper walks sometimes up to 4 hours in the morning if you get an early start.
But what really makes or breaks a safari is your guide. We had two of the finest in all of Africa. Shadreck and Steve were just flat out amazing. Their knowledge of everything in the bush is outstanding. Their passion for wildlife and nature was on display everyday. Being a safari guide can be exhausting and they were with us for the entirety of our 11 days...their passion never waned. They also exhibited strong ethics and took great care to minimize or prevent disturbing wildlife. Besides being exceptional guides, they are equally exceptional people. We all felt like family. It was a privilege to spend so much time with them. I've been traveling and taking clients around Africa since 2015. The Bushcamp Company's guides are still the best I've been around and Shadreck and Steve are two of the company's brightest. KUYENDA IS A MUST if you visit South Luangwa NP in Zambia. Stay a minimum of 4 nights and walk every day. The park is rich in wildlife. You will see many animals during game drives. But walking the bush is just something special, especially with the guides from The Bushcamp Company.

Room tip: Stay a minimum of 4 nights

A wonderful bush camp experience. Warm and friendly staff willing to cater to your any requirement. Aaron, the senior catering manager gives you a fine dining experience bar none.
You may be in the wilderness, but the accommodation is luxurious.
The game viewing is spectacular and the special bush breakfast is just the cherry on the top.

Room tip: Take a power bank along and don’t forget the sunscreen.

In the South Luangwa National Park, this rustic but well supplied bush camp is the perfect combination of wilderness and comfort was wonderful. We stayed in one of the 8 round thatched roof chalets surrounding a wide open comfortable lodge and dining area. A very special part of each separate chalet was the total private but open to the stars bathroom. The high points begin with the best guide we've had on numerous trips to Africa. Fanuel was a walking encyclopedia of everything African from tectonic plates to edible tubers on the roots of plants with every bird and animal in between. Best of all he was truly excited with us about every discovery. We'd come back just for him! He led us on fascinating walking safaris to see the big and little of the bush. But the rest of the staff were extremely kind and helpful. Nothing was left to chance. We discovered everything but the rhinos wiped out by poachers. We had delicious meals catering to our special needs. This camp is part of the Bush Camp company which runs a few additional camps and a main Mfuwe Lodge with all the amenities of a world class hotel. We stayed there for a night and at Chindeni. Both were excellent , but Kuyenda was the best.

      HOW THINGS USED TO BE!
Review of Kuyenda Bushcamp - The Bushcamp Company

This is my second visit to Kuyena and it certainly will not be my last.
Kuyenda is THE bush camp experience!! Rebuilt every year with eco friendly thatch materials and nestling among trees on the edge of the savannah, it’s isolated rustic 1960’s charm accentuates the fact you are entirely in the Bush. Kick off your shoes and Feel the white sand slipping through your toes around the main reception/dining area sipping a Gin and Tonic watching the sun go down and elephant and buffalo disappearing across the open grassland. As at every Bushcamp Company camp I have had the immense pleasure of staying in the Staff are warm, friendly and professional and ensure your stay is a memorable one while Manager/Host Jacob ensures everything is as you would wish. The Rondavels (circular thatched huts) are simply furnished with rush matting on the floor and a beautifully comfortable double bed where you can watch the moon rising through the wide meshed panoramic window. The open aired secure bathroom is adjoining and while there is no running hot water within 20 minutes hot water is delivered to the holding tank ready for your shower and provided for your morning wash. Meals are all Cordon Bleur standard served under the amazing starlit sky by candlelight with after dinner coffee around the fire. All this accompanied by the soft sounds of the Bush….the distant roar of lions, laughing hyena or the muffled cough of leopard or just Silence!! No need to worry about safety with an alert watchman and within a circle of hurricane lamps. Wildlife viewing is amazing as there is a natural spring fed area near the camp so encouraging all manner of wildlife and whilst on your safari you will encounter an amazing variety hopefully including leopard, lion and wilddog. If they are around Suzyo your incredible guide will spot them ! His knowledge and expertise is amazing. Thanks to the Bushcamp Company for adding even more happy
      memories.

Room tip: All rooms are amazing

We arrived at the airport and were driven to Mfuwe Lodge.
It was now evening and a guide called Elijah he was very knowledgeable and so enthusiastic took us to Kuyenda camp, on route he spotted so many animals from hippo, giraffe, mongoose, a four toed elephant shrew and many more it was a great start to a lovely holiday. Kuyenda camp was perfect, rustic, clean where you felt at one with nature, from the guide called Alec who was great and taught us so much about the animals, through to the staff and fantastic food!
Our next camp was Zugulilia where we spent one night, unfortunately not long enough! beautiful huge oversized bathtub outside on your verandah where you can watch the animals, again great informative guide Michak (so sorry if I spelt your name wrong) so friendly and helpful and great spotting of animals.
Finally back to Mfuwe for three nights - lovely guide Jason who took us on some great drives seeing leopard, lions, buffalo and much more, also really lovely seeing the nearby town and school, food was great including friendly staff - great holiday!
