A beautiful place to relax after a safari

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Apr 2019
Bumi is a luxury spa lodge with a choice of wildlife-viewing activities, and many people when we visited were staying here for some R&R after a busy safari elsewhere. The view out over the lake from the beautiful pool area is stunning and there are several different lounge areas - indoors and outdoors - where you can sit and enjoy the view with a drink. Our room was very luxurious and also had an incredible vista over the lake, with scores of elephants and hippos feeding on the shoreline visible from our balcony. There is air-con and both indoor and outdoor showers. We were lucky that the rain stopped long enough for us to enjoy a sunset boat trip on the lake, where we were able to glide silently up to a bull elephant who was feeding in the water and then have sundowners in the middle of the lake as the sun dipped over the horizon. A very special experience! In keeping with the rest of the ABC camps, food and wine were excellent and varied, and the staff both friendly and efficient. The only niggle is that we did have a problem with ants in our room (room 4) which was raised with staff at the time but not effectively dealt with, and had we stayed longer than 1 night we would have asked to switch rooms. Other than that, a lovely lodge.

The best 5 star hotel in the world, overlooking a beautiful lake that attracted all sorts of animals, with unparalleled service and individual attention! Cherish, the hostess, quickly became a friend and was there for anything we needed. Madison, our guide, was very knowledgeable, with a wicked sense of humor and made each game drive personal and fun!

Room tip: There are no bad rooms!

Wonderful site, awesome staff, one of my best safari experiences. Our guide was very kind and good educated, Godwin, showed us around, was very helpful and taught us lots about animals, birds and trees. All people at Bumi Hill were very friendly. We enjoyed our stay very much and will try to come back.

Stayed 3 nights and was pampered from we arrived.
Bumi Hills Lodge is a truly 5 star lodge, extremely well managed, with a magnificent situation, overlooking Lake Kariba from both main area, swimmingpool pool and rooms. On the lakeshore with grass we could all day see elephants and early evening also hippos grasing.
Service was great and efficient and we had a personal “butler” from we arrived. From early morning she took care of us in a very nice and efficient way. Eg. when Peder had a skinreaction from a spiderbite, she arranged for a paramedic to treat and follow up. The rest of the staff was equally serviceminded and efficient.
The food was really excellent and every evening well presented by chef and winekeepers.
Our room was spacious, beautiful and with a large, wonderful bathroom, outdoor shower and a terrace towards Lake Kariba.
The main area with infinity pool, bar, spa, gym and restaurant was fantastic.
Our super ranger took us on some very interesting gamedrives on land and boatdrive on the lake.
If you are looking for luxury, service, great food and interesting game- and boatdrives we can strongly recommend this lodge.

Our family spent three nights at Bumi Hills over Christmas (Dec 26-29) and could not have been more thrilled with our experience. The views from the rooms are stunning, and even better, you get the same view from the fantastic outdoor showers. Imagine having a hot shower on a huge private deck while looking down over beautiful Lake Kariba as a herd of elephants walks by! It was bliss. Unlike the other safari camp where we stayed, Bumi Hills also had air conditioning in the rooms, which was very welcome as it got quite hot during the day. The beds were very comfortable, and though we never had time to use the bathtub -- we were on the go from before sunrise till after dark--, it looked very inviting! The infinity pool is gorgeous, and the views from all the eating areas are fantastic. The food was very good and unlike in some of the earlier reviews, all our drinks were included. I think this must be something that has changed in the last couple of years. Each night there was a different pairing of wines meant to enhance the food and it was lovely to try out so many different types of South African wines. And we were even treated to "sundowners" (the term for afternoon cocktails) while out on our afternoon safaris. Our guide checked to see what we liked and then brought along gin and tonics, or wine, or beer. Not only were drinks included, but so was laundry service! This is the kind of small service that makes me happy. Every day we could leave our clothes in a basket on the bed, and by the end of the day the clothes were back, neatly folded and ready to be worn again. If you are worried about keeping your luggage manageable, this is a real blessing! We also appreciated the fact that there was wifi in the common areas but not in the rooms. Who comes to Africa to sit in their room watching Netflix? We got our emails done in the sitting room before dinner and then enjoyed chatting with the staff and other guests before and after meals. There is a large billiard table where my husband and son played every night after dinner. Last but not least, the staff were outstanding. Cherish is the world's warmest and loveliest host, and Jason is also great. They were always on hand to greet us when we returned from safari with warm or cool towels to wipe our faces! And Steve, our guide, blew us away with his knowledge of the animals, his ability to track lions, identify and expound on the habits and minutia of the birdlife and his general warmth and enthusiasm for his job. Our kids (19,22 and 23) were all stunned by how much he knew and excited every day to learn more from him about the animals, plants and geography we saw. Were there any negatives? Lots of night time bugs, but nothing scary or biting, just annoyances really. We would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend this outstanding Safari Lodge.
