We stayed at Somalisa for three nights as a family of four. The elephant viewing is breathtaking. But even more than that, this is a truly proud and authentic African experience. The tents and decor are simple but incredibly tasteful. The team we had looking after us were very special people. I would particularly mention Phindie, who was our wonderful host, Taffy, who was our spectacular guide and Brian, barman and kids entertainer! We couldn’t say too many good things about everyone at Somalisa and we will miss them all!

When I think of our 13 nights on safari in three countries, the image that shines most brightly is here, lying on a lounge chair and watching elephants large and small guzzling water at my feet, herds of buffalo and wildebeest trooping by, cautious kudu, playful zebras and the occasional scuffle between the beasts and the species.

Somalisa started as a bush camp with bucket showers and is still somewhat rustic. The canvas tents are not designed that well, with light switches and plugs in odd places; the bathroom has a draw curtain for the toilet but not for the shower (though it had a huge lovely tub and an outdoor shower, too).

There is good shelving behind the bed and adequate counter space in the bath. The tent is warmed by a small wood stove, which is stoked for you at night, but did not last through the early morning, making it very challenging to get out of bed. We were there in June, which is the Zimbabwe winter, and it was frigid in the wee hours. (You’re awaken by a knock and a pot of coffee accessed through a pass-through cabinet).

The family room is two connecting rooms; the smaller one has its own door, shower and toilet, but no wood stove or outdoor shower. The tent deck was generous with a comfy hammock. The lounge had a small bar, sitting area, dining area, small pool, two fire pits and an awesome deck by the watering hole. There is no WiFi.

This small enclave is around the corner from the main Somalisa, which is nearly identical. Its larger watering hole is where elephants like to swim, while they came to ours to drink, we were told.

Dining was relatively simple but tasty: choose your own items for a stir fry was our first dinner; choose your own toppings for pizza was one lunch. Breakfast was light, with porridge and cereals and toast by the fire; tea and snacks were pretty weak. They did a nice job catering to our preferences (vegan, etc.), and brought in a sparkling wine the day after I asked for it.

Our stay was enhanced by the delightful new manager Phindile, who quickly solved a room problem. Our guide Albert was good, with excellent language and knowledge. Along with nice water bottles for our use and to keep, they provided warm ponchos instead of the usual blankets for the drives, and we appreciated the windproofing and the hood.

Any discomfort with our lodging was forgiven and forgotten as we basked in intimate animal encounters, both at the camp, and on our drives: we “hunted” with a pack of painted dogs, enjoyed a pride of lions with six cubs, and watched a cheetah gnaw at his supper.

Now: understand that Hwange Park fills its watering holes through solar power as there is no other source of water. So the creatures here know which ones they like.

And boy, they like Somalisa Acacia. I would return for that watering hole; I’d just bring more warm clothes.

Thanks to Phindie and the entire team!

From the moment we were greeted by the entire Somalisa staff, singing beautiful African tribal songs - and a shout out to our camp host, Ronald, the great dancer - waving and welcoming us, to the overwhelming beauty of of a herd of Africa buffalo, to scores of elephant mothers arriving at the watering hole with their babies, and huge baboon troops, it just bowled us over. As for accommodations, the tents and beds were clean and comfortable. A warm fire was made for us every night to keep us warm. The food was excellent, as was the wine and beer and cocktails. Yum. There was breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner. We were well fed! And two game drives per day. Clement was such a wonderful guide. He has a keen eye and we saw more than our share of animals and birds. Perhaps our greatest sighting was a leopard mom and her cub eating their kill. I must also mention that we saw the lion cubs, all six of them, plus four mothers and two big papa lions, which we were able to view up close. We took a walking safari with another experienced guide who carried a gun. Quite dramatic, but necessary. That was magical day, one of many cherries on top of an excellent cake. Clement spotted a steenbok for us on our last night, and he told us it was a sign of good fortune. Yes, it certainly was. Highly recommend.

My family & I recently stayed at Somalisa Acacia & cannot rate this place highly enough.

Everything about Somalisa was excellent. The family tent we had was beautifully arranged & had everything we needed to feel safe and comfortable. Our room had a full verandah that looked out onto the main watering hole which was frequently visited by elephants, zebras, water buffalo etc. Just amazing.

All the staff we dealt with were excellent. A special mention should go out to our guide Clement & our host Phindy. Both were fantastic and made our stay magical.

Clement was amazing and his knowledge of the animals and the bushland was amazing. We learnt so much from our time with him. He took our kids under his wing & took the time to show them a good time & teach them about the animals and the bushland that he loves so much.

Phindy could not do enough for us and made our stay so wonderful. We loved how caring she was and how she took to our kids. She played Jenga, made bead bracelets, kids mocktails and just generally gave her time to have fun with our kids. The kids loved her so much and were sad when they had to leave.

The food should also be mentioned. For such a remote place, the food was incredible. We also loved Phindy and Clement joining us for dinner. It was a great time to go over all the wonderful things we had seen & just learn a bit about each other.

Overall an amazing place that will forever hold special memories.
Thankyou Somalisa. We will certainly be back.

Africa explorers of all ages should experience this African Bush Camp at least once. Somalisa Acacia lies close to Somalisa Camp offers family tents and takes children below 12 years of age. We had the utmost pleasure of enjoying 4 nights at Somalisa Camp. Tents offer all the comfort you want while sleeping almost amongst the elephants – in fact some of them venture through the camp beating the tents' roof with their trunk in order to get hold of tree fruits lying there. Every morning and evening a most experienced guide takes you on the game drive unforgettable memories guaranteed. The whole team is fabulous! Enjoy most interesting conversations with them and other guests (there will not be more than 14 in total!) on wonderful evenings at the campfire. Wines and food are excellent. Big shout out to our outstanding host **Sidney** from Sandra, Ben and Wulf.

Room tip: all tents are equally fine - you'll have best views at wildlife and encounters with in all of them.
