“abbey down a county lane”
Review of Croxden Abbey

Pretty cool abbey down a county lane. As everyone said so far... 2-3 car parking at most. The abbey is right next to a farm-like house and looks like part of the complex is part of the house.
Free! Easy place to relax, sit down and have a picnic.
We were the only people there so we had it all to ourselves to ramble around in.

We stopped off on our way to Rocester. Parking is a small lay by by the gates. There are a few info boards, so it may be worth looking at English Heritage web site first. Think in any weather the site would look good. One of those little gems.

Part privately owned, run by the marvellous English Heritage, this is a ruined gem; or a gem of a ruin. There's not an awful lot of information about the site, but there's not a lot of the site left. But what is left is magnificent.

Situated in a remote location north west of uttoxeter in a countryside setting. The road runs through the ruin and even though there is not a designated parking area, there is room for approx 3 vehicles by the gate. There are a few information boards around the site and the general ruins are interesting. A private house is on site so it does make it feel slightly intrusive but as it's a free location it's well worth a visit.

The fact that so many Abbey's were ruined in the 16th Century is a crying shame, but then, so many ruins have been preserved, and the ruins at Croxden have enough about them to imagine what life would have been like for the monks who lived here. The history to the site is also more varied than many, so as it's free to enter, and not too taxing, this place, once you've found it, is worth the effort.
