Savute is marvellous. I could just finish the review now, really. With the added line "Just go!"
But Trip Advisor generally wants a little more than that.
Savute Safari Lodge is one of the best experiences that Botswana offers. The reserve itself is superb, with lots of game, interesting old volcanic scenery, the now flowing channel, and the marshland. During this trip, we spotted three leopards, including one absolute poser! At last count, I think we saw 13 individual lions, and the pride of five males we saw twice, including when they came into the lodge after dinner, firstly to drink at the channel, then to wade across it and disappear past the waterhole towards the rooms! Amazing.
Of course, you can't not mention the elephants, who are constantly wading up and down the channel in front of the lodge. You could almost just sit on the deck all day and have a complete safari experience! Going to the other side of the marsh to see the breeding herds of elephants was also very special, and quite a different experience to the more commonly traversed areas of Savute.
For the second time, our guide was Baba, and this was by request. Baba was delightful, again, and made the experience such a special one. MC and Michelle were on holidays, but the lodge was managed beautifully by Action and Ollie in their absence. Everyone just made you feel so welcome and at home. If I could, I'd go back again for a third time in an instant.
The rooms are spacious, with a deck overlooking the channel. The bathrooms are well equipped, and there were lots of little special touches such as flowers on the beds, postcards in the rooms, and baked biscuits in a jar for snacks. And the embroidered lion pillow cases were gorgeous. They should sell them in the curio shop, they'd make a mint.
Go to Savute. Stay at Savute Safari Lodge. You will not regret it. Oh, and say hello to Baba from me.
