This tented camp of 3 -5 tents is located in the Savute area of the Chobe National Park and due to park regulations moves every five days to another location. During our stay, the camp was situated right at the erratic Savute channel which was however dry at the time (late July) and I believe has been for a while.
Of all the camps of our vacation, this was the one we had the least expectations of, partly because we did not know how the area and wildlife would be and how basic the camp itself would be due to being a mobile one. As much more was our delight when we arrived, met the staff and went on our first safari with our guide. And it constantly grew throughout our stay. Savute under Canvas is an extremely well run camp thanks to Daniel, the manager, with a wonderfully dedicated and attentive staff. As an example, sometime during our first afternoon, we had a minor problem with our toilet. The staff instantly set out to fix the problem (competently and successfully) and repeatedly made sure we had no further problems. Guiding by Morronse was superb.
Though wildlife concentrated mainly on the waterholes due to the general aridity at the time, we saw a lot of interaction there between elephants, a pride of lions having killed a buffalo, and a fit of jealousy between two male and a female jackal. The only reservation we had was that we were there too early in the year because the great herds of wildebeest and zebras had not move in yet from the north.
This was, however, fully compensated by the great dedication and enthusiasm of the people at Savute under Canvas. Not only did they know their trade, they were also extremely interesting to talk to. They gave us more the feeling of being on a safari with friends than being guests which was great. Compared to some other locations, especially in the Delta, the camp might not be located at the most stunning place, but the facilities were immaculate and the tents were furnished with great love to detail. The washing table certainly provided an aura of Out Of Africa. Other reviewers have noted that the tents were in need of repair. When we stayed there in late of July, the tents appeared quite new to us. Also, we have read occasionally that the food was more on the simple side. We can only disagree. The food was varied, plenty and excellent even compared to more expensive camps we visited and even more so considering the fact that everything was cooked on open fire from breakfast , afternoon tea with cakes to three-course dinner. We can only hold the master chef in our highest regard.
All in all, andBeyond made a very good impression on us as a safari travel company with selected personnel, great attention to detail and the right focus on what makes a genuine safari experience.
Highly recommended.
