Owner description: A typical trip will have you exploring our magnificent coastline and bay while looking for whales, dolphins, sharks, seals and seabirds. Apart from the Southern Right Whales, we are able to view Brides Whales, Humpback Whales and possibly even Great White Sharks. There are many Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Dolphins, Sunfish and plenty of coastal marine birds to been seen whilst out at sea.

We booked our trip before we left England and confirmed it the day before. Unfortunately we struggled with the directions and got hopelessly lost, not helped by the tourist information centre pointing us in the wrong direction. When we finally arrvived we had missed our trip. Staff could not have been better and simply booked us on the next day (another trip wasn't going out that day). We arrived early the next day and had a wonderful trip. We sat on the top deck which was good but I think staying downstairs so you can access the front is the prime position as on top you are limited with your view if the whales or dolphins are on the other side to you. We took lots of pictures but none do justice to how incredible the trip was. At one point we didn't know which way to look as there were at least 6 whales and many more dolphin all around the boat. Sadly non of the whales fancied getting too close but still stunning!

2.5 hours out of Cape Town is Gansbaii , where the best whale watching in Africa can be found. Southern right whales congregate in Walker Bay to calve and start to raise their young.

Do yourself a favour , take a 20 minute drive further on from the tourist hotspot of Hermanus and the commercial boats out of there and instead pick Ivanhoe , from the first moment you meet them you can see they obviously care about the whales that are the foundation of the business and the trip reinforced this in spades. Slow approaches, consideration for the well being of the whales, professional and helpful to all their guests. No shortage of whales were spotted ( it was in excess of 20 ) and we were able to get close enough for good pictures without disturbing them in their natural environment.

Brilliant experience. Totally recommended.

Our whale watching trip out at sea was certainly a memorable one, we found the vessel to be comfortable and the crew knowledgeable and professional, considering the safety and well being of the whales, the passengers and the crew at all times. A worthwhile experience to return.
