We were staying at the Critchley Hackle hotel and felt compelled to spend an evening in - dining at the local restaurant.
While I generally steer away from eating "in house" due to complacent chefs, I thought we could give it a try.
Remembering that we generally ate breakfast in the same space, the early morning omelets were perfect in every way.
While the service by surly staff is a bit of a deterrent, the offering is well-thought out and beautifully presented. For dinner you can select from options in a three or four course meal.
I ordered the lamb shank while my partner ordered the trout. Both meals were spectacular and we enjoyed them thoroughly.
The desert, however, was lackluster with the "Malva pudding" dry and stale - a terrible let down to a potentially stellar meal. Make a turn there if you are in the area - you could do worse!

We stayed three night and enjoyed wonderful breakfasts by the lake. Food was top notch and service very friendly. We also had a lovely dinner with good wine.

Sitting on the lakeside having dinner and breakfast with the sun shining and the tranquility of the surroundings made our visit to this hotel and its restaurant one of the many highlights of our big trip to South Africa.

We stayed at the lodge last year and we were particularly impressed by the breakfast. As a result we booked for Sunday breakfast last week. What a change! Badly cooked poached eggs, fatty undercooked sausage and arguably the worst cappuccino we have had in years. I asked for a pot of tea which was served with long life milk. I was told that they did nor serve fresh milk.

Come on Critchley Hackle. You market yourself as an upmarket country lodge but seem not to bother to get the basics right.
