Amazing Experience

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 12 Jul 2023via mobile
The experience at Thakadu was incredible! Words can not truly convey what my family and I felt. The staff were professional, extremely attentive, loving, and warm. To celebrate mum's birthday, which was a few days before we arrived at Madikwe, the staff purchased a cake and sang traditional songs and did traditional dances. It was unexpected, beautiful, heartfelt, touching, thoughtful, and ever so special.

The accommodation was luxury. We received turn down services in the evening, with sweet extras (usually fudge). We had tea, coffee, and hot chocolate making facilities in the room. The room also had heaters (greatly needed in July, South Africa's coldest month), a separate bathtub, and shower.

The food, including the afternoon tea, was 5 star quality and delicious.

The game drives were incredible! We saw 4 of the big 5 almost immediately! From the moment we entered Madikwe and when we arrived at Thakadu, we saw elephants and giraffes. On the game drives at 6.30 am and at 3.30 pm we had opportunities to see other animals. I especially enjoyed seeing the cheetahs.

I would highly recommend Thakadu for the safari, luxury accommodation, and amazing staff team. We immediately felt welcome and at home.

My son and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Thakadu. All the staff are incredibly friendly and efficient and the camp is run to a high standard. Tsholo our guide ensured that we "found" the game and had excellent viewings. I highly recommend this community run camp in such a lovely reserve.

I spent 2 nights at thakadu river camp at the end of May and thoroughly enjoyed it. Took 4.5 hours from Johannesburg due to N4 accident near rustenburg. Last 40 of so minutes entering and within park was a fair quality gravel road which my small polo vivo managed to traverse.

Accommodation of a good standard. Luxury tents equipped with generators. A few small issues with rooms. Lighting a little poor in sitting area at night and one of the bath faucet wall attachments were loose. Otherwise great comfy bed with electric blankets, aircon and heater. Out of africa glamping ambience with all mod cons. Fudge left at the bed post dinner.

Common lounge area was beautiful and open plan and adjoining well appointed dining area. Really loved the pool area and lounge behind the boma. Beautiful sightings of elephants nyala and zebra coming down to water hole to drink.

Food of a good quality, not Michelin star, but tasty. They accommodated my halaal/ veg/ seafood diet well, and chef sipho was always friendly and accommodating to dietary preferences. Loved the outdoor boma dinner vibe. Waiters and manageress friendly and smiling. Service slightly slow.

The highlight of experience was the game drives. Vehicles are a bit fuller than at higher end lodges. Our group size ranged from 5 to 9. Vincent was very knowledgeable and a phenomenal guide. He had a wealth of bush knowledge and a great sense of humor. We saw wild dogs killing a warthog. A great cheetah sighting for over 30 mins with cubs and feeding. Great rhino and elephant encounters. We failed to see a leopard. The peace and tranquility driving in the fresh morning air and hearing birds chirping watching the sun rise was spectacular even when big game sightings were less frequent.

Madikwe is a great choice, much closer than kruger and can compare in terms of game offering. Thakadu is a very worthwhile accommodation option and offers all the essential services at an affordable price in the mid range safari category. Enquire about South African/ sadc discounts.

A wonderful safari experience. In the middle of a game reserve, we stayed in a tent with all modern amenities. There was a river flowing just behind the tent and I saw some elephants swimming there.
The food was excellent. The safari experience was great as an experienced guide drove us through the bushland, grassland and forest of the Madikwe game reserve, twice a day at dawn and dusk for four hours each for 4 days!
We had our fill of seeing wildlife from hyena and wild dogs to plenty of zebras, elephants, giraffe and even Lions. It was a thrilling experience.

Room tip: Carry some basic medicines with you as this place is remote..

We recently spent a wonderful weekend at Thakadu celebrating my sister-in-law's birthday. From the minute we arrived to the time we left we were spoiled by the staff and felt like A-listers. Vincent and Gery, our game rangers, were outstanding. Their bushcraft, tracking skills, knowledge of the animals (big and small) was simply incredible and made for exceptionally memorable game drives. We saw cheetah, wild dog, lions (twice), ellies, numerous birds and raptors and so much more. It is clear that these two gents love what they do and relish sharing their experiences and knowledge with guests. Patience and Priscilla in the front of house were kind, welcoming, and ever so professional. I will highly recommend a stay at Thakadu any time you're considering a bush break.
