A fun bush weekend away

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 06 Jan 2020
Thakadu River Camp is great for couples or families and very good value for money compared to the other lodges in the Madikwe Game Reserve. The staff are very friendly and helpful and go out of there way to make your stay is as comfortable as possible. The tents are fantastic and built in the thick undergrowth of the bush so you really feel like you are close to nature. With the tent blinds open you have views all around you complimented with the sounds of Africa and a fresh breeze circulating through. We found the food very healthy and extremely tasty, hats off to the chef. We had Ranger Jerry on our vehicle after a recommendation from a friend. He was fantastically passionate and full of energy on the first game drive and then somehow lost his interest and mojo on the next few game drives, which was a bit disappointing as a rangers energy plays a huge role in your overall experience of a bush getaway. We also feel the lodge should be stricter with game drive times as we had to wait half an hour for a family who weren't on time for the drive. Also the lodge needs to be firmer with noise levels on the vehicle, again we had a family making so much noise for the whole game drive, which defeats the purpose of why you chose a safari holiday in the first place. We did still see the Big 4, but no leopard as leopard sightings are generally rare in the Madikwe Game Reserve. The lodge has a fantastic pool with great views where you can enjoy a cocktail and watch the elephants come in and drink. All in all a wonderful weekend away and excellent value for money. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Thakadu River Camp was the perfect location on our long planned famliy holiday to introduce our grandchildren (aged 7 to 11) to the african bush. The tented accommodation is spacious and comfortable, food was very good and plenty of it, staff were very friendly, helpful and genuine. As a group of 9 we had our own vehicle and driver Gerry who is up there with the best for effort, knowledge and an all round nice chap. We had some fantastic sightings, only the Wild Dogs alluded us but not for want of trying. The staff sprung a special suprise of birthday cake, singing and dancing to acknowledge my husband & I celebrating our 70th birthdays - won't forget that in a hurry - thank you so much. My only negative comment for this camp (and I know it frustrates them as well) is the terrible access road for the last 30 kms or so, very slow and uncomfortable.

I first went to Thakadu 5 years ago on a business trip. I've counted the days since until I could return with my family. The staff created a truly unique experience that my wife and our three children could not possibly have enjoyed more. Our ranger, Gery, did an amazing job ensuring we saw the "Big 5" plus all the other diverse flora and fauna Madikwe has to offer. The lodge offered a wonderful place to hangout in between game drives. The food was wonderful -- especially the iced coffee drink offered at high tea -- and the staff at all levels made us feel at home. Now we will count the days until we can return.

We spent three days at Takadu River Lodge. Super!

We were super well received and there was immediately a delicious lunch ready. The food was tasty and good throughout the stay, the staff was so friendly. The game drives were unforgettable. The ranger tried to spot as much as possible and showed us as many parts of the park as possible.

In short, a must!!!!

Thakadu River Camp is a cozy lodge with a beautiful reception area which has been recently redecorated. Staff are friendly and helpful, the tents are comfortable and clean. I was also impressed by the food. A few options but I prefer quality rather than quantity and l think they have found the perfect balance. Food is delicious and in the right quantity. My only disappointment was the ranger that took us on the game drives. He was not informative and preferred to stay quiet most of the time. This was definitely a downside as we were with guests from abroad at their first safari experience and we would have appreciated more info on the animals. The guide simply drove us around , he would even get annoyed if we had some requests and had no fear of showing it. This is just a shame as l think the rest of the staff do an excellent job and they should deserve full rating

Great game and bird viewing in Madikwe GR. The food was excellent, well portioned and deliciously varied. The tented rooms are spacious, well appointed and kept very clean. The huge comfortable beds and mosquito nets ensure. Good nights rest.
