This was our second trip to Pungwe and we will be back again. We travelled from Brisbane, Australia. We stayed for 3 days in September 2017. We stayed 5 days in September 2018! Wow!, great time, and amazing sightings, we saw cheetah, leopards, lions, elephant, rhino, buffalo and much more. Our safari guides Never and Wonder, were brilliant, very friendly and they got us close to the most amazing animal sightings. We cannot thank them enough for the amazing trip. On 1 game drive in 1 hour we saw Cheetah, leopard, elephant and a large pride of lions. Birding was good too.
As per my last review in October 2017, you will not find better value for the chance of seeing the big 5 up and close. Pungwe is the best value for money place I know of around the Kruger national park. you will see the same animals and sightings as the people from the other lodges who are paying 4 or 5 times as much.
Pungwe is a comfortable authentic safari camp. the rooms are large, and the beds are very comfortable. I love the fact you sleep in a tent under a large thatch roof. Ensuite bathrooms with hot and cold water and a bath - which my wife loved. Only 4 chalets means maximum 8 guests so its nice and intimate and not overcrowded.
The meals were good, and the camp situated in a nice environment where the animals can roam freely around. We felt safe at all times, but really enjoyed the fact that we had elephants walking through the camp at night.
Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Pungwe to anybody.
Michel, your safari camp delivered a truly wonderful time for us again. Cant wait to get back to Pungwe. Gary and Angela.

Room tip: All rooms are good.

It was a fantastic stay in the Pungwe Bush Camp. The staff and the guides are so friendly and the game drives and bush walks are really exciting. Even the breakfast as well as the dinner were absoluty perfect.
We hope we will come back.
Thanks for all, Sabine and Max

Pungwe was recommended by a personal friend and we went as a family. The individual chalets were superb given that the whole camp does not have elecreicity and was unfenced. it was a beautifu and serene location. The cook and the food was outstanding. For that alone i would have given a 4 or 5 star rating. However, the game drives and our guide were appalling. the Guide, Never, raced through the bush, never stopped for small game even when i asked him several times to do so. He was only interested in meeting up with other rangers and guides from other camps and was not interested to share anything of value to his gusts. Highly disappointing. In addition, we were told as a family of 5 that we needed to pay extra for the morning drive vehicle which we were happy to do so. the other guests were not asked to pay the extra fee which i fund utterly disgraceful. I won't be back unless i know the ranger has been changed.

Russell O, Owner at Pungwe Safari Camp, responded to this reviewResponded 3 April 2019

Dear Christina

Thank you for your review, it is through constructive criticism like this that we learn. I would like to apologize for the quality of guiding and the safari experience that endured at Pungwe. Never is very much a stand by guide and was pressed into service due to unforeseen circumstances. That being said, he certainly has the knowledge to conduct a very informative safari and should certainly know better than to ignore the wishes and preferences of the guests. We have taken this up with Never and will ensure that he receives additional training before allowing him to take guests out again.

You are correct in stating that morning game drives are an extra cost, as our standard offering is a guided walking safari in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon/evening. I looked into the matter of the other guests not paying for the morning drives and wish to assure you that although they had not prepaid for the morning drives, they did do so upon checkout.

Thank you for your compliments with regard to our chef, Robert, I will certainly pass these on to him.

We hope that you will reconsider your decision to not stay with us again as we assure you that your experience on safari was not the norm and we would very much like to treat you to a proper safari.

Regards

Russell

The camp was great, basic but just as expected. Michel was a great host, the food was excellent and the guides (Isaac in particular) always managed to find the animals we were looking for - all of the big five, plus wild dogs!

We would definitely stay here again.

We had the most amazing experience with our 4 day stay at Pungwe it was so peaceful and relaxing. the staff were so lovely and looked after us very well from camp to safari drives. The camp and tents are very comfortable just felt 5 star and luxurious, excellent game viewing with good trackers !! we was so lucky to have regular visits from the elephants who are free to wander through the camp. we would defiantly stay again.
