Pungwe Safari Camp is a true African safari experience. The camp is situated in Manyeleti Game Reserve which is adjacent to the Kruger Park with no fences between the Game Reserve and the Kruger. Manyeleti is much quieter in terms of tourists in comparison to the Kruger (A big plus point) The camp is small with only 4 tents and offers the best of the bush. Well fitted tents with a lovely communal area for dining and some R and R. There is no electricity and hot water is supplied by wood fired donkeys. Remember to get your timing right for the shower to catch the hot water. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Excellent game viewing (big 5) with 2 drives a day which offers the best African sunsets!
If you are looking for an authentic bush experience, Pungwe is the place to go.

This is a magical place.

As Michel, the owner, goes to great lengths to explain, it's a bush "camp". It's not a lodge where everything is at the flick of a switch. It's a camp, intended to give those staying there the "authentic" taste of just what life in the bush is really about. Hence .... no electricity. Hot water provided by little wood burning donkey stoves morning and night. Tented accommodation - very comfortable accommodation, it has to be said, with soft beds and cosy duvets and flush loo's, showers and baths all under a thatch roof - but you are, nonetheless, still a part of the living bush. There are animals all around you. You don't wander about in the dark on your own. They come through the camp. This is what you come here for.

At the time of our stay there were nightly visits from an elephant intent on ripping up water pipes. This rarely happens in the UK.

The game drives with local, knowledgeable guides, enthusiastically intent on ensuring that you see all that there is to see, are an amazing experience - as is the stop for sundowners out in the bush as dusk descends. G & T's from the bonnet of a Land Cruiser whilst listening to (and later having an encounter with) a magnificent leopard just a few yards down the road. Unforgettable. Driving through and within touching distance of a pride of lions. Priceless.

And at the end of the day, after sharing dinner with your guides, returning to your tent to find it aglow with hurricane lamps and ..... a hot water bottle in the bed. It really can't get much better than this.

One tip. Ensure you are driving a vehicle with reasonable ground clearance. It's an hours "energetic" drive from the gate to the camp.

Spent a weekend in Pungwe and what an experience! I've been and stayed in a lot of camps sites, but the experience here was superb. Especially for me were the rangers. Issac's skills at tracking led to all the major sightings, as well as walks up close! new tents also great. if you seeking a real bush experience, this is it!

Room tip: all rooms are the same.

I recently returned to my home country of South Africa to stay with my family. While there, my Dad organised a short trip to this wonderful exclusive retreat near to the Kruger National Park. The Manyaeleti Game Reserve is a quiet oasis, offering a unique wildlife experience with luxury camping facilities, away from the main tourist areas of the Kruger Park. We stayed in the Pungwe Bush Camp. This is one of the smaller camps on the Reserve and caters very well for small groups of friends or families. They only have 4 or 5 luxury tents on-site and so you are always a top priority as a guest. The tents are beautifully decorated inside and very clean, with your own personal bathroom including large bath and shower. At night there is no electricity in your tent and the rooms are lit up with oil lanterns. Some may not enjoy this aspect, I personally loved it and felt it added to the authenticity of being in the middle of the African bush. When we arrived, we were greeted by the wonderful guides who happily assisted us with our bags, showed us to our tents and advised us of our itinerary. We were taken on 2 game drives daily, an early morning (5am, just in time to catch the sunrise) and an afternoon drive at 3-4pm, just in time to catch the sunset. The game drives were by far the best I have ever been on in my life (20 years of returning to S.A and doing similar trips). The wildlife is in abundance, we saw all of the big 5 and plenty more. The best sighting was of a Leopard up a tree at sunset, magical! The guides were excellent at explaining the surroundings to us and their knowledge of all things wild was absolutely incredible. To top it off, there is a scheduled stop on the evening drive for a nightcap. You can chat to the guides and watch the sun go down, to the sound of the birds and crickets and really unwind from the stresses of modern life. Back at the campsite there is not much to do but relax and read or chat to the other guests. This is not a bad thing if you want to relax. The best part of all, you will be constantly fed! The chefs are lovely and provide the tastiest meals. They put a great deal of effort into the presentation of the food and do not skimp on portion sizes..you will not be dissapointed! All, in all a wonderful, genuine bush experience, with great hosts.

Thank you all, I look forward to returning soon.

Pungwe was the best experience of the African bush i think one can have or imagine. dont be dissuade by the fact that there isnt electricity, because they have all the light and amenities necessary or required: heated showers, lanterns for light. the camp is simple but classy and elegant. the lodge is as authentic as you could imagine, its thatched and absolutely gorgeous. the tents are also first class, not something you pitch in your back yard. its like a regular hotel room except that its a tent and the bathrooms are built on, not part of the tent. the food is exquisite and prepared by the sweetest ladies. camp drives, 2x daily are so exciting, there is an abundance of all the African animals you could dream of seeing, led by expert trackers who go to all lengths to make sure you see them all up close and personal. they are very experienced and sweet, and your drives in the evening include a sunset cocktail stop. kinda fun too. i would go back in a heartbeat. we dont have immediate plans to however, i would be heartbroken not to return. mike, you are a wonderful person and host. Thank you and we hope to see you again!
