This is an impressive looking, modern venue, with a lovely view on the N2 30 km from Swellendam.

The service is good, and the wine on offer from a local cellar is decent.

The food is dire. We are talking schnitzel so dried out, that they may as well employ an in house shoemaker and use the stock there.

The sauce.... well bland tasteless and lumpy. Terrible. Chips ok, salad acceptable.

All in all try the nearest wimpy.

This place gets one star for being there to start with, one for the service staff, and one for a reasonable wine stock.

It can only get better with time. It cannot get worse

This was probably the worst experience of my entire life with incompetent and rude staff with digusting attitudes.

Other than that the food is way to expensive and not even good.

Shut this place down ASAP

Having had lunch at Alula soon after it opened, we decided to stop again at the beginning of December 2020 as we had enjoyed it very much previously. What a disappointment. We sat outside which was lovely watching the zebra . We were also very happy that we could take our dog there onto the veranda as well.
There was no menu. We saw it later inside the restaurant on a board. But it was not visible to us on the veranda. However we were not concerned as we just wanted Toasted Cheese, Tomato and Bacon Sandwiches. The order came with chips which the waitress hadn't mentioned even though we said we wanted a snack only. But that didn't matter. The sandwich was very plain and had a strange taste. We asked what it was and the chef came out (not wearing a mask!!) He said that he put organum on the cheese . I would have thought that this would work but perhaps it was too much, I don't know. It just wasn't a good sandwich. Then to our huge surprise we saw that each toasted sandwich and chips cost R85.00. We cannot return for prices like that I'm afraid.

So let’s eat somewhere new. Stopped off at Alula and I was a little disappointed at the limited menu - Pizza being the most appetizing. Waitress advised of schnitzel not on menu. Ordered this - not bad, bur expected home style, not pre prepped by frozen food company. Atmosphere is a little meh. Definite potential though. Time will tell.

Ideally situated about 30km from Swellendam, and a mere 100m from the N2 right in the middle of nowhere.
Brand new facility only open for a month, with lovely views over the plains, as well as a little paddock with eland, sable, zebra, springbuck and ponies. In the pipelin is a zipline too. Kids have lovely swings to play on right next to the back deck.
We had a group of 10 school kids, who enjoyed the excellent pizza out on the deck.
Very friendly staff. Will definitely stop over here again!
