Functional place in nice location

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Nov 2016
The rooms here are fairly functional, and the bathroom was rather sparse and didn't really dry out. It was very cold at night when we stayed, and the heater on the wall didn't provide much warmth. Very early one morning a large group of people ate breakfast outside our room on the veranda, which woke us up. I think the lodge itself was locked at that time so they couldn't go inside. The kitchen has a couple of hobs and a microwave which worked well enough for breakfast but we chose to eat out in the evenings.

The setting of the lodge is beautiful at the base of the mountains, and there's excellent hiking to be had up there.

Easy to find and the owner is friendly and personal. Rooms are very quaint and comfortable with a lovely garden and patio area. All rooms are ensuite. No dorm rooms available. But it's worth the visit. Near the hiking trails and horse riding.

I have now read the reviews which I am no doubt going to echo here, I wish I had before we booked here. The lady who runs the hostel took around 20 minutes to come to the reception after we arrived, despite booking and advising of our time of arrival. Meanwhile her incredibly aggressive dog barked incessantly at us (thankfully) from behind a gate. She then proceeded to tell us off for "antagonising" him. The rules for the "backpackers" were laid down like we were school children and there was a 30rand charge for each device to be connected to the wifi. All the facilities were beautiful and the kitchen was exceptional with cast iron pots, despite this I would never stay at this place again. In the morning the lady made her own breakfast and never spoke to us, except to reiterate to my partner that she needed to clean up and put away all the cutlery used. I cannot reiterate how rude and unpleasant this lady was, it really spoilt our stay here.

The title says it all. I have stayed in many many backpackers all across the country. Not secure and overpriced cheap rooms. Disappointed to discover some of our stuff got stolen as well (from a private room!!). A travellers lodge is supposed to be a safe place not like this sorry.

Me and my boyfriend spent there 2 nights. Despite its name this place is not backpackers as commonly known in SA. It does not have dorms and the cheapest room for couple costs 480R/night. Room was very basic, which was quite dissapointing considering its price. It was very cold and damp room, we could not get warm there. Beds were comfortable though. Bathroom would benefit from handwash, shelf for toiletries and toilet brush. Main house is decorated nicely, has good kitchen, but it is small house and it felt a bit crammed at times. We did not like cat's eating area in the kitchen. Internet is charged 30R/device. Camping is costly: 300R/night.

We needed a weekend away from the craziness of life and felt like footloose travellers arriving at the backpackers under the trees in the shadow of the glorious mountain.

After a welcome cup of tea, we were booked into our lovely, clean twin room with our own en suite bathroom.

Wonderful, crisp linen and such scrumptious mattresses that we just had to take an afternoon snooze.

This is our new favourite overnight spot in Swellies.

Thanks for the lovely, warm welcome Steph. We'll definitely be back!
