Viljoensdrift is right on the river and they have a river boat that leaves twice a day. You pop into the deli choose your lunch from the awesome selection of foods salads cheeses pates and cold meats. They bake their own bread and the brown seeded ciabatta is to die for!!
You then take the picnic basket, knife and plate that they give you onto the barge and it's off down the river for an hour or so eating and drinking on the way.
A great and unique concept for the area and super fun.
Well done Viljoensdrift for being so innovative.
If you want an awesome Savingnon Blanc for lunch pop into Springfield and bring a couple of bottles of " Life from stone " SB it's among the best in the country ( and we've nearly tried them all!! ) or if you prefer reds Bon Courage is next door and their Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz are both awesome ( I prefer the Cab Sauvignon but that's just personal preference the Shiraz drinkers in our group said it was one of the best in the area) Zandvliet just over the road produces delicious Shiraz ( and top race horses as well) Dan de Wet is an amazing guy !! He bred Pocket Power and the full sister River Jetez for those that follow racing .

I went on this river cruise with my normal enthusiasm for nature and adventure. What a pleasure. To just enjoy the view of vineyards, the birdlife and jumping fish whilst cruising by. I also enjoyed the company of the other folk. I think the tranquility of the surrounds lulls everyone. You can also enjoy the picnic lunch that you chose at the Deli as well as enjoying the wine that you bought (in the glasses that the Deli provides). I am not a drinker but I enjoyed listening to the ladies promoting the wine tasting whilst christening(me) the spittoon. Of course if you go to a wine farm people (in Cape Town) expect you to bring back wine. I recommend the boat cruise and might do it again but I would like them to supply a little step up - the boat is quite low from the dock

Only tasted one wine (chardonnay, very good) but the best part was the make your picnic from the deli for lunch mission. You choose what you want (tapanade, pesto, carpaccio, cheeses, fresh ciabatta etc) plus some wine and they give it to you in a basket with glasses (can buy bio-degradable plates and cutlery for 2 for only R10 there as well) and off you go, to park off next to the river under a tree and feast!

We enjoyed a boat trip one Saturday lunchtime. The deli had some great choices and we selected a delicious picnic which was packed into a box complete with cutting board and knives. The bread was still warm from the oven. While we waited for the trip, we tasted the wine - which was reluctantly pored by a miserable and unfriendly lady. The boat trip was great, not particularly pretty or scenic, but a novel way to spend an afternoon chilling with a loved one. We would do it again. (Except for the wine tasting).
