“Poor food. Tourist trap!”

Victoria Room Restaurant, Swartberg Hotel, Prince Albert
Restaurant details

Firstly they were out of many items, no rack of lamb, no lamb pie, no kudu pie etc.
Secondly they said they were too busy to bring the soufflé starter before the mains, so their brought it with the main ... huh ?
The oxtail was tough - really tough. The chicken curry was very bland. The 3-way green pasta was a disaster of note ... more suitable as dog food.
The veggies were cold and the food terribly overpriced, especially for such a mediocre establishment.
The waiter was friendly.
It is at best a tourist trap and and should be avoiding as far as possible - steer clear!

Apart from the fact that several dishes on the menu was just not available, the remaining food items we ordered bordered on inedible. The oxtail was so tough and undercooked that it was near impossible to get it off the bones. The waiter was good but he’s in a tough spot when the management and kitchen is below standard. We were told that they struggle with suppliers and that’s why half the menu were unavailable and the kitchen needs a new chef. The food is horrific. And the food is overpriced. Awful awful. Go anywhere else in town but here!!

We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The oxtail bredie and Springbok shank was really good, and we were pleasantly surprised by how afordable it was.

There is just something special about dining in such an historic, beautiful room, and building!

After reading the reviews I thought this would be probably the best choice in town, it might be but we didn't think it was great. Yes it is an historical Victorian style room but food is nothing special. Cheese souffle was not that tasty , carpaciio little meat and lots of salad, Beef filet was OK as was bobotie but it all lacks flavor. Wine selection is limitted.
