The road from Prince Albert over the Swartberge Pass is a feat of engineering if you consider when it was first built in the mid to late 1800s. Today, if the weather is good and the pass is dry even standard saloon cars can traverse the switchbacks as the road is well compacted. Stop where you can - make sure its safe - for a photo or two. The views are spectacular.

The trip down is as much part of Gamkaskloof as your stay. Changing vegetation, ancient mountains and various buck species, make it worth your while! The valley is peaceful and utterly unique, a fascinating place! Great birding opportunity and beautifully restored accommodation.

This mountain pass has incredible scenery - the dirt road can also be accessed by a motor car but I would suggest a 4 x 4 vehicle.
Narrow in places where it makes passing difficult and extremely high so would not suggest it for the feint hearted

If you have a 4 x 4 you can drive the road to The Hell (2 hours each way) but the best way is to take a tour. Lindsay from Dennehof in Prince Albert provides a comfortable day trip with an excellent commentary and a good lunch at The Hell. There were only 2 of us on the trip and despite the fact that Lindsay has done the journey 700 times he communicated and responded to questions with enthusiasm. The scenery and wildlife are beautiful and the history of the settlement is fascinating. A really wonderful experience.

We stayed in Die Hel for 3 nights, but wished we could have stayed longer. It is incredibly peaceful and relaxing, and you really feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The road to Die Hel takes about 2hours (to cover +/-40km), and is very slow-going, but was not as difficult as we were expecting - if you have a high clearance car, you will be fine. We rented Snyman Huis, which was picture-perfect -- the splash pool was a real bonus!! Highly recommended!
