We have been to Riverside twice now and we Love it!! The Staff are brilliant, kind, efficient and like family now!! The dogs are just lovely and so calm! If you want a beautiful, tranquil setting and atmosphere, then Riverside is the best!! Breakfast is plentiful and delicious also!! Beautiful swimming pool!!

Room Tip: Lovely large room, raised toilet seat, wet room, very large comfortable bed, patio doors which open onto a beautiful setting with large swimming pool. Stacked fridge, kettle, coffee, tea etc.

Dear Elaine,

Many thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you are safe back home in Scotland. It was great seeing you and the family again. The dogs are still looking every morning at the door of room 5 to see if your or your husband will appear. The new guests off course thinks it is for them. We look forward in seeing you next year again.

Greetings from the entire Riverside Team!

When writing reviews on my travels I try to be as fair as possible and to give the correct information for other travellers so they know exactly what they can expect.
Riverside Boutique Hotel describes itself as luxury but unfortunately that is not the case and is at best average.
On a positive note the room was large, the bed very comfortable and the staff very helpful and understanding when we had a problem.

However everywhere in the room, and the gardens was very scruffy and tired looking.
The bathroom constantly had a drain smell, the shower walls were mouldy, there was only a shampoo and a hand lotion for amenities not even any soap.
There was no key for the balcony door so we could not secure the room even though it is next to a main road.
The windows would not shut.
The juliett balcony had broken flower trays, and was itself faded and worn.
All around the doors and windows where ever you looked in this hotel, the paint is peeling and chipped.
The swimming pool is a murky colour, and where no one swam in even the children, this is nothing to do with the water shortage but just general lack of understanding of what a luxury hotel should be offering. Also worth noting there is no barrier around the pool if you have small children.
The wifi was very intermittent
All the garden furniture was either broken or rusty or just very worn.
Cigarette ends were left in the flower butts.
Where breakfast is served is awful, the place is so grubby, we did not go back again after the first morning and just got our own.
There are also seven very large dogs who wonder the property, which we were told were very friendly and I did not see any evidence to the contrary however they could be quite intimidating.
How this place has a four star rating from other travellers is beyond me, it lacks the luxury element and a great deal of work needs to take place to restore this hotel to its former self. We stayed because we had paid in full in advance at the hotels request, on the first night we did look at alternatives but felt as we had paid we would just use it as a base rather than spending time in it.

Dear Mrs Marks,

We would like to thank you for taking the time and effort to write such a comprehensive review on your stay at our hotel. I was alarmed and taken back to learn that we did not live up to expectations and it is our aim to have customers leaving happy and Satisfied.

I would like to take this opportunity and apologize for your discomfort you experienced during your stay from the whole Riverside team.

Had I known of all the facts in your review while you were visiting I assure you I would have definitely attended to these in time, however you have left and the only feedback I had was your review above. I do appreciate the fact that we cannot keep everybody happy but would appreciate it if you can contact me personally and be more informative and specific as to some of your statements mentioned above.

Thank you for your positive mentioning on spacious room and comfortable bed and mentioning about how helpful and friendly staff when you've had a problem. I would like to mention that if you had explained any of the problems to management or myself when I told you about the medicine and fruits I left in your room after hearing you fell sick, after visiting a local restaurant or even when the owner and I carried your suitcases to the car on departure; or even the night that I was on duty at reception when you came back from dinner and I greeted you it seemed that you didn't want to communicate at all. I still mentioned my concerns and offered if there isn't anything I can do concerning your well-being. You assured me that you are feeling much better now and that this is not necessary.

May I please request and would like you to contact me personally as to get more in-depth explanations concerning the different statements above; again I sincerely at all times trying to better our hotel and keep my guests happy. You mentioned that you are very fair reviews on your travels and I appreciate all you are saying, however do not understand some of your remarks.

You mentioned that everywhere else in the room and in Gardens it looks scruffy and tired. I agree that the mould in the shower is totally unacceptable, however the rest of the room has been refurbished, newly painted. The firniture has been re-upholstered. I went and inspected the room again and as mentioned if I knew you were unhappy I would have offered to different room or even booked you into another hotel and refunded you. I appreciate the Garden looks a bit tired and as you know that we have a water shortage in Cape Town due to the little rain over the past 3 years and I would like to find out more in detail where the lack and scrubbyness of the garden is. Our maintenance manager was off on sick leave the week that you were visiting and if you had mentioned the smelling drain to me I would have had a plumber coming in immediately to sort this out and would have move you to another room. I received your review late last night and on our maintenance manager's arrival I mentioned to him about this problem I read in your review about and upon investigation if was found that the grey water pipe leading into our garden from your room was blocked and the bad smell was from this and has been solved.
I also remember that shortly Friday after you checked in you ask for soap we do not make use the cubes of soap anymore and in place thereof use of biodegradable liquid soap; however we still had some soap cubes left in the store room and both of these were supplied to you. I did take the matter up with housekeeping and was told that it was rectified then you were satisfied with the replacements offered. I was not aware of the balcony doors' key that was missing and would you have mentioned this to me, I would have moved you immediately to another room. If I knew you felt unsafe next to the main road, I would have even called in a locksmith to have this fixed or replace the lock on the door. The door to the balcony also had a second mounted lock on the inside which I'm sure you make use of. We do have a fully electrified fence right around the property and pride ourselves not having any incidents for the past 7 years, and this is also the reason why we have 6 dogs. If I knew you had a dislike in dogs, again I would have sorted other accommodation or kept the dogs totally away from you. As far as I'm aware off the dogs during your stay was all the time with me and the night you and your husband returned from dinner I walked.through the lobby and I still told Jag who was lying near the entrance to move away, upon which you said it is not necessary for him to do so. I tried to make conversation and asked you how your dinner was and your husband still said it was fine; but you both quickly made your way through to your room The Maintenance Manager also explained that due to the renovation the windows hinges are still tight and he would attend to them this week as they do close, but needs a strong hand currently to close properly. I've had a look into your room where you have stayed but could not find any peeling paint around the window or door frames on the inside. I agree on the outside some of the buildings need some paint work. I am sure you have seen that during your entire stay a team of painters are busy with the front part of the Manor House working their way around and to the back where you've stayed.

I could not understand why you mentioned that the kids would not swim as I saw them swimming in the garden room pool. On further investigation I noticed on your correspondence that you would love to swim on arrival and I realized they never mentioned to you that there are 2 other sparkling clear pools. I've taken this up with the check-in staff and please accept their apologies top - we've had a food hotel for 3 weeks in a row and this is no excuse, nut this was one of your requests in the correspondence; the other request was that you do not want to stay in the garden room but in a manner house and we actually moved guest around in order for your request to be met. Whenever we fill up the pools with borehole water, it is murky for a day or two and we have also just installed a new "eco" pool pump at the Manor Pool.

You mentioned that our breakfast room is awful and grubby - this was extremely alarming to me as hygiene is on the top of our list and especially concerning food areas and I would appreciate it if you can let me know exactly what you found wrong in your experience in the breakfast room; I need more specific explanations as to address the problem. You maybe have used the Google translation from German to English but in order for me to rectify things which makes you unhappy or future guests, I need to know direct facts I assure you it won't be offended. You are more than welcome to write to me in German as well as I had German as a subject at school and I would understand it perfectly.

Again I would like to thank you for bringing all the factors to our attention and would like for you to visit again and see how the hotel looks after the paint work, as well as the garden furniture that's been fixed. I also firmly believe that communication is so Vital and the most important factor. Once a guest is unhappy and not conveying these matters to the establishment they simply cannot rectify anything. I'm not sure reading your review that even if I kept the dog aside, that you would visit again, however I'm going to copy this letter in German and forwarded to you and see if there is anything I can do to make you feel better. I would like to also please request in your future travels, to not keep the unhappiness in. Life is short and holidays are expensive and one should enjoy this. It would off course delight me if you take me up on my offer and visit us again complimentary.

Again from me and the team, please accept our sincerest apologies for your discomfort and if we knew you were looking for alternatives on the very first night as you mentioned, I would have made sure that you had a wonderful end to your South African visit and only have good memories of Cape Town and Hout Bay.

I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,
Robert & the Riverside Team

The location is excellent and a real retreat away from home. We have a baby and they were totally accommodating with a cot in the room.would definitely stay there again.
