Staying here was a great experience and a real treat for us as we had our own self-contained cottage with kitchen, pool, walled garden and wood fired hot tub/plunge pool. The facilities were so good and the complementary refreshments were so plentiful that we had to tear ourselves away to go into town or do a wine tour.

The hotel is situated in quiet a leafy suburb that is within walking distance of the town and some great restaurants such as La Bon Vivon (try the tasting menu) and Café Des Arts (local style dishes), as well as the wine tram routes or even a short walk to La Lude winery for fizz/MCC. The restaurants in Franschoek seem to close quite early but that gave more time to enjoy the hotel facilities and accept free drinks in the lounge, whilst chatting to other guests.

There were some outdoor games to try and bicycles to borrow should one wish and the owners even provided complementary sun-creams. There was also a large shared swimming pool for guests around which, breakfast was taken. This comprised a huge fresh fruit platter, a wide selection of hot foods to order, breads, pancakes, Danish pastries etc we were fit to burst but had to finish it all as it was lovely.

Room Tip: book a cottage room or the old house if there is a large group

You just have to go and stay! We now understand the term 'Boutique Hotel' and what it should feel and look like. The accommodation - purposely designed to meet every aspect of your stay. Our room had lots of space and was [furnished] in keeping with the history of the original building and site - our tv appeared out of a munitions box [similar to those used in the Boer war] positioned at the bottom of the bed. We had a wood burning fire in case the weather cooled and we did use it one night... cosy, we had a complementary bar and snacks including a nice bottle of bubbly on arrival and the most comfortable kingsize (I mean big bed) with quality wrap around linen resulting in 8 hours of glorious restful sleep! While we shared a large lounge and swimming pool with our neighbouring room [not that we met] we had our own hot tub in the privacy of our own outside area.... and the eye for detail... sun hats and sun cream by your sun bed! The service reflected the quality of accommodation with the most wonderful 5 course breakfast... no need for lunch or snacking after this breakfast... served in the tranquillity and spacious area around the main poolside courtyard. Location 10/10 and before we left early evening to walk to our restaurant in Franschhoek.... we were treated to cocktails and drinks with the grand piano being played [ever so well] in the back ground. And after dinner we walked back to a welcoming end of day glass of port, Bushmills whiskey (Declan's reminder of home) or another glass of local wine.... all on the house. Just Perfect and we would like to thank Declan, Stacey, Meena and all the lovely people who worked at the Akademie for making our stay so special and we hope to return soon! Ken and Maureen

Akademie is a truly outstanding, charmingly beautiful ,quaint guest house. It's effortlessly perfect; every single aspect and final-touch has been considered and completed to an impeccable standard. Each member of staff we encountered were super helpful and couldn't be more friendly. Stacey and Declan were such a delight to talk to and super informative. The rooms and decor throughout are simply stunning. The breakfast was delicious and the happy hour with a live pianist was just the icing on the cake. The service standards really do exceed the finest in the hospitality in the industry. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Everything was great! Because it is not a big hotel, we got the feeling we were very special. The room was excellent and we had a private pool and a hot tub. Breakfast is outstanding! The laundry is back on the same day. Friends of ours recommended the Akademie and we want to recommend the Akademie to you all.

Akademie Street Boutique hotel was the first part of our honeymoon. We arrived the day after our Wedding on the afternoon of Friday 10th March. We made the short trip from Stellenbosch and enjoyed a couple of wine tastings on our way to Akademie Street.
What a wonderful and warm welcome we received from Declan. We were given a little tour round the main house and shown where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks & cocktails whilst listening to the piano being played. There is also an extensive library that you are free to use. Free wifi is available throughout the property. There is also a PC that you can use should you need to print anything off.

We were then shown our accommodation for the two nights my husband and I were staying for. We chose Gelatenheid for the 2 nights to just simply to relax after the wedding. Declan showed us round the 2 storey house with private pool and pointed out the mobile phone that is left in the room with all the contact details of nearby restaurants listed should we wish to phone and book. Great idea, although booking prior to arrival in Franschhoek is recommended. The spacious villa had a wraparound balcony that you could enjoy watching the sun go down and a small but compact bathroom with lovely toiletries as well as slippers and robes. Downstairs was a kitchenette, another toilet and a seating area as well as another seating area up stairs with TV. There was an outside tub as well as an indoor one, we didn’t use the tub, as it was so warm both nights we were staying.
There was complementary drinks in the fridge downstairs and snacks which were replaced daily which was such a lovely touch.

Breakfast was truly extraordinary with fresh fruit being served, plus a smoothie which changed both days depending on what fruits were available to use. There was also homemade granola with honey and yoghurt to enjoy as well as a further option of a cooked breakfast with toast and preserves. The breakfast really set you up for the day and you certainly didn’t need any lunch. Dinner isn’t included and this is where Akademie Street have been very clever. In Franschhoek, you are spoiled for choice with amazing restaurants covering street food to fine dining and everything in between. By not offering dinner, Akademie Street can really focus on the other elements during your stay. You really notice this attention to detail.

The extra nice touch of straw hats and suntan lotion on the lounger was a great extra feature, as it was so hot at the start of March when we were staying, suntan lotion was a definite must whilst lying out by the pool. We ate at Allora (Italian) both nights, which again we recommend for good, simple food, we hadn’t booked anywhere as we weren’t sure what we fancied.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Akademie and would highly recommend. Our only regret is that we only stayed for 2 nights. We wished we had longer and if ever in Franschhoek again, we will definitely return.

Thanks to Declan and the team for making our stay truly memorable.
