This is a 'must do' when in Franschhoek. So entertaining and a great way to see about 5 wine estates without the hassle of drinking and driving. There are different routes to choose from so best to go onto their web site beforehand and decide which wine estates you would like to visit. This will determine which route you will select i.e. Red route, yellow, blue etc. Good idea to schedule a lunch stop on the route and give yourself about 2 hours for the lunch stop. You can select picnic style food, more casual cheeseboard style eating, or something more substantial. Each Wine estate has something different to offer. A most entertaining day.

We stayed in Franschhoek especially to experience this and it was a very reasonable price. However be warned that you will be paying for each of the wine tastings at the various wineries at which you call. There is a choice of 6 "lines" all of which combine the iconic Tram with a bus service. Don't be fooled into thinking the tram runs to all wineries as it is fairly limited, although great fun when you are on it.

Some wineries will transport you from the station to the tasting area via a tractor pulled wagon which is also a great part of the experience. It was difficult for us to decide which line to choose, ending up on the Green Line that covers some of the more boutique wineries, including one owned by Sir Richard Branson. It was a great surprise to see him there on our visit, taking lunch at his winery! A very nice surprise that kept everyone on our tour very excited.

As you go around it tends to get more rowdy as inhibitions are shed and wine imbibed. We met some fascinating people on the way round and will keep in touch with them for sure. Each stop is an hour which is pushing it when you are tasting or eating. You can stay longer but two hours might be excessive. It is hard to get around all the wineries in the time allowed. I suggest you start at the first available time or you will certainly have to miss several stops.

Some wineries are better than others but all have their own vibe. We failed to book lunch at any and you should do that if you want to eat as they sell out fast and then you are reduced to nibbles and you might get hungry as this is a full day. On our trip it was cloudy and showery but it doesn't really matter as it runs in all weather. If it rains you will get wet though. You don't have to taste (but almost everyone does) and you can hang around the wineries and take in the scenery which is usually spectacular.

Very well organized. If you buy wine on your tour they will take it, store it and give it to you at the end so you don't have to carry it around which is a great service. It all runs to time and is generally very well staffed with friendly guides. Highly recommended. I wouldn't want to drive after the tour though as the opportunities to drink are substantial!

The winetram is an excellent way to see some of the wineries in Franschhoek without having to drive. The tram only runs to a couple of places, the rest of the stops are by an old fashioned bus. The timetable allows for about an hour at each stop, unless you want to stay longer at any one winery. At all stops, the bus/tram was very punctual. We took the Yellow Line route starting at 10:45, and did 5 wineries with an hour at each place - this is the maximum you could do in the time available. We started at Rickety Bridge, nondescript wines, then Grande Provence, beautiful gardens, very slow service. Our absolute favourite stop was the little Eikehof farm, very friendly owners, we had a delicious cheese and meat platter there plus bought a couple of bottles of Merlot. Leopards Leap was the complete opposite, huge commercial place, the waiter tried to rush us through our 4 wine tastings in about 15 minutes flat - we'd give that a miss next time! Wished we had gone to Chamonix instead. We finished at Dieu Donne which has gorgeous views over the valley and a beautiful wooded Chardonnay.

We did a full day on the Wine Tram and went to four vineyards but you could do six.
It was a very tiring day but very enjoyable and we went on all different types of transport. It was extremely well organized so when you got off one method of transport there was another tram, tractor etc. waiting to take you to another destination. There was the Wine Bus itself plus a Tram, a Tractor Trailer, a Lorry. You can also have lunch or a cheese platter if you so wish. There are several different routes you can go on and you can do a full or half day tour. It was very enjoyable.

Just got back from a great day on the Franschhoek Orange Tram Tour. It’s the best way to experience the vast range of wineries that Franschhoek has to offer. Mitchell, our guide on the tram was great - interesting and personable, he was very knowledgeable about the area and told us everything we needed to know about the tour, as well as being a great source of knowledge for the rest of our trip around SA. The vineyards offered plenty of choice to cater to anyone’s taste - Babylonstoren was our favourite cellar tour and wine tasting and the lunch at Glen Carlou was one of the best meals I’ve eaten in a long time - all set in this beautiful wine countryside. If you’re in the area - this is an essential way to spend a day!
