Bat camp

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Mar 2024
We enjoyed our stay at Twee Rivieren and thought the camp itself was great. The pool was the biggest of all the rest camps and it was a nice place to chat with other guests. We really appreciated the Lion's Den restaurant after 8 days of cooking/braai-ing! I'm a vegetarian and wasn't hopeful about the menu, but they had a section of veggie options. I particularly enjoyed the greek salad and veggie breakfast. Service wasn't the friendliest, but to be honest that has been our experience of SAN parks in general so we weren't fazed. We found game viewing around Twee Rivieren to be the best in the park (maybe because you can drive up both riverbeds). I appreciate that it's a lot of luck in the KTP but we saw something interesting and different on every drive.

There are also a lot of birds around camp and worth walking around looking up at the trees.

At first, we were thrilled with our family cottage (#24) as the air con worked well and was 24hrs, the fridge and water was cold (unlike Mata Mata and Nossop), and we were the last cottage in the row so had a bit more privacy. We did wonder why there was foil around the beams and we soon found out...my husband turned the lights on at 5am and 4 bats started flying around us. The foil seemed to drive them mad (the light reflections I think). We both like bats and weren't that fussed about them at first (after the initial shock!), but that changed when the droppings starting falling on us whilst we were in bed. We asked reception if we could move and we tried 2 other cottages, but both had bat droppings in. The receptionist was very apologetic and honest about the fact they had a bat problem at the rest camp and she couldn't say for sure that any of the cottages didn't have bats in. In the end, we stayed put and left the lights on in the bedroom all night so they flew to the kitchen and roosted there.

Can't say that I would want to stay here again in future unless they have an effective (and humane) way of dealing with the bat problem, or do something about the thatched roof as apparently they get in through gaps in the thatch. It's a shame as the game drives around TR are great! We did see a new wilderness camp being built in the area so that could be a good option for future stays.

Room Tip: The laundry block is in the campsite area and you can buy tokens at reception. There is a tumble...

It was the third time for me in this camp, I found it lovely and our 3-bed chalet was very comfortable. Bathroom was OK. There is the heat pump that is needed in winter evenings.
The restaurant is always a good deal, we had a delicious dinner at “Lion’s Den” this time as well.
The shop has a good choice of food (not fresh) compared to shops in other parks.
The new exhibition about San and Mier people is very interesting.

Many people think that when you visit Kgalagadi it's best to go from rest camp to rest camp. We could only find accommodation at Twee Rivieren 3 nights in a row, but it exceeded my expectations. Accommodation is fantastic, the restaurant has really good food, and we had the comfort of one base (travelling with kids) and exploring from there. There is a waterhole a short walk from Chalet 1 where you can see the most amazing sunrises. We explored the roads to Nossob and Mata-Mata without any timing problems.

Room tip: Visit the bird hide and waterhole that is a short walk from Chalet 1!

Well run rest camp. We camped one night, stayed in a chalet another and used the pool and restaurant. Pool was clean, the chalet was spacious and clean - no bats! And had good utensils and big fridge-freezer. Far better maintained than Kruger NP has become. The restaurant is basic and with one server but they were friendly and helpful - ensured we had cold beer! We find it useful having the restaurant option. Swallows visit the pool for a drink, thousands of bats around and saw wild cat and the resident Verraux's eagle owls in camp and the area is productive.

Chalet itself was the most boring of KTP, technically OK! And we saw even couple of african wild cats front of our braai before sunset - not to mention several birds. And even cape cobre just by the camping area fence!
Chalet was clean and had the best shower of KTP. Some chalets seem to have tricky / limited parking spaces, but our #23 was good on that sense.
Very good for first or last nights, starting point to deeper areas of the Park.

Well managed camp with comfortable clean huts and great game drives in the area. Huts are stocked with basic items but some missing utensils, so if it is important to you, bring it along, mainly small items such as a sharp kitchen knife and extra drying cloths. It was one of our best holidays ever and we look forward to going back. There is a lot of advice available on the internet, worth familiarizing yourself with all that could be appropriate to you. Friendly staff greeted us, the shop had the basics we needed, and we had great burgers at the restaurant. Loved how well informed the staff was of the local animals, trees, and reptiles! Well trained!
