We travelled from Ireland to get married here. We picked it as it seemed high quality without been frilly. It was an excellent choice as the 2 of us stood out on the green grass and under that amazing view on a beautifull sunny day in March got married. As strange as it may seem every other place seemed to be trying to be a high quality urban style hotel in the middle of nature, with all, without exception, failing. Montusi is quality top to bottom to the point I had to ask the Manager, why their website so underplays the place. Which as most of you know is pretty much the opposite of every other accommodation on the planet. I am not saying this as I got married there, as I am the most pedantic in the world when it comes to getting what I expect from Hotels et al.
This place is absolute paradise with plenty to do and great food. As for our wedding the team there could not do enough for us. We wanted a simple wedding with just 4 people under an amazing setting. They helped us in our organisation and in any way they could. This is the best Nature and luxury can bring together without the crazy rates we seen some places look for. Its a true family run diamond in the rough. We look forward to going back, maybe for an anniversary..

We just finished a lovely visit to Montusi for a quick mid-week holiday. Our stay was only 2 nights, which is not enough time to take advantage of this resort and the beautiful surrounding area.

Upon first impression, it seemed very remote and the drive was down a dusty road with a few small bridge crossings. But the resort itself opened before us with lovely green lawns and thatched-roof cabins on a beutiful property.

This resort is worth every one of its four stars. We loved the teatime cake in the louge (served at 4:00), drinks at the bar, and a lovely dinner in the main dining room every day. Breakfast was delightful and served on the patio. We enjoyed interacting with the staff, who were particularly warm and friendly. Montusi is a family-run operation and it was nice to see small trappings of the familial atmosphere, with a few friendly puppies in the lounge and such.

Most importantly, Montusi differentiates itself my working very closely with the local community. They've helped establish a school for children in the surrounding area, and sponsor several children in the nearby townships to go to school and receive a well-rounded education. Apparently, some previous guests have now opened an orphanage in the nearby township, as well. The warmth and generosity of the staff was very evident.

The highlight of our stay was an afternoon hike to Tugela Falls, which was gorgeous. The staff packed a hearty picnic lunch for us that included everything we needed. We didn't use a guide (as was suggested), but had a very lovely hike on our own. We hope to return sometime soon and take the Amphitheatre hike, which requires a bit longer stay (it's about a 90 minute drive from the resort, so it takes an early morning to make it work).

I would definitely recommend Montusi for a family getaway or a romantic holiday like ours.

We stayed at Montusi during Christmas 2008 with two kids (4 years and 10 months). This place offers you a lot to do but suits equally well for those who just want to relax. The service and meals are excellent and the quality of the accommodation is of high standard. The units offer you a lot of space and good level of privacy.

They have special meal times for families with children so can recommend this place for both families with children and couples looking for complete relaxation.

The setting in the Drakensberg Mtns of S. Africa is absolutely beautiful. The staff is dedicated to your pleasure and comfort. And then there is the wonderful food. We were there on Christmas Day and the family that manages the facility invited all the guests to join them in a 3-4 km walk to the river to share hot chocolate and cakes and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. If it wasn't so far away from my home in NYC I'd go back often. If you're going on safari in South Africa you should schedule a few relaxing days at Montusi Mtn Lodge.
